Cannabinoids Are A Reasonable Option For Chronic Pain Treatment

thcv marijuana human trialsBy Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director

Cannabinoids are safe and effective in the treatment of chronic pain conditions, according to a review of recent clinical trials published online ahead of print in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia.

Investigators at the University of Montreal, Department of Anesthesiology evaluated the results of 26 clinical trials “of good or excellent quality” involving 1,364 subjects. Trials assessed the use of various types of cannabinoid preparations, including herbal cannabis, liquid and oral cannabis extracts, and synthetic cannabinoid agents in pain treatment.

Authors reported that cannabinoids were efficacious in alleviating various types of pain, including pain due to neuropathy, musculoskeletal disorders, fibromyalgia, HIV, and other chronic pain conditions.

They concluded, “Overall, the recent literature supports the idea that currently available cannabinoids are modestly effective analgesics that provide a safe, reasonable therapeutic option for managing chronic non-cancer-related pain and possibly cancer-related pain.”

Their conclusion mimics that of a 2015 systematic review published in the Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology that reported, “[C]annabinoids are safe, demonstrate a modest analgesic effect, and provide a reasonable treatment option for treatment of chronic non-cancer pain.”

An abstract of the study, “Medical cannabis: considerations for the anesthesiologist and pain physician,” appears online here.

What about the patent that the Health and Human Services holds? Is this just a way for the Federal Government to withhold quality research information from the public. There are 25 pages of projects under that one patent. What are they doing with all that information. They are not giving it to the DEA.

  2. thanks for reply-any person who owns more than 10 acres of land will benefit from industrial hemp,,,”vote”–4 only supportive people for legalizatin, of he geen,,peace

I know right, but Kentucky has a grass roots movement called the Kentucky Hempsters I believe and they are lobbying hard to bring back that great industry not just for their state but the country as well! I live next door and have 88 acres of fertile ground just waiting to be filled. A lot of people know of Harry Anslinger’s reefer madness smears of cannabis and minorities but not as many know about the timber barons who teamed up to stomp out hemp as it has many industrial uses as cannabis does medicinal properties and so their livelihoods were threatened or so “they” thought. Greed is the rich man’s gold!!!

  4. it all boils down to–follow the $$$$-wall st-industrial hemp is a u.s. industrial revolution ready to happen but wall st says NO–peace

  5. … and what is worse is that there is STILL taxpayer money being spent on the 80-year fruitless attempt to convince the world that it is dangerous.
Of course, after millions and millions of OUR dollars spent on this “mission”, our government absolutely refuses to admit the multi-billion dollar waste of taxpayer money on this “war” to keep cannabis away from the public —- and we know why —- BIG BUSINESS AND BIG PHARMA.
THE JIG IS UP — and they KNOW it’s up.
So much for OUR government representing the “WILL OF THE PEOPLE” — the will of the MAJORITY.
What kind of government do we REALLY have, anyway — one that is compensated / paid by the taxpayers who they supposedly represent OR one that is bought / paid off by BIG BUSINESS ???
I have never seen where the term, “democracy” has EVER been used in the same sentence as BIG BUSINESS.
Rhetorical question: I wonder why …

It kills me to hear of yet another multi-millions dollar study shows what we already know! This information has been available since the dawn of time from the first puff! I understand we need research for all the naysayers and for the advancement of medicine but come on, really? It not only relieves pain it saves lives! Just transfer Israel’s medical marijuana programs and studies to our data banks and we’ll be done w/the wasteful spending because they have been the pioneers in cannabis research and DEVELOPMENT for decades!!! So shameful that we are dragging our feet when almost everyone around the globe knows it’s a cure all. It’s called Cannabis not Can’tabis, duh!
