Cannabis May Help Heal The Brain After Injury

new study published in the journal Cerebral Cortex has found evidence that activation of the body’s cannabinoid receptors may lead to neuroprotective benefits which can help heal the brain after a traumatic injury.

According to researchers for the study; “The results provided the first evidence for the involvement of ECS [endocannabinoid system]in the neuroprotective action of minocycline on brain edema, neurological impairment, diffuse axonal injury, and microglial activation, since all these effects were prevented by the CB1 and CB2 receptor antagonists.”

These findings suggest that activiation of the body’s cannabinoid receptors (such as consuming cannabis) is vital in bringing about the neuroprotective effects of the drug minocycline. The results indicate that activation of the cannabinoid system may increase the beneficial effects of a number of other prescription drugs, and may, on its own, have vast neuroprotective capabilities.

These findings, though not directly related, help to validate a study released earlier this year which found that even miniscule amounts of cannabinoids (in this instance, THC) may protect the brain after injuries from things such as seizures, toxic drug exposure and a lack of oxygen.

  1. My suspicions were validated. In 2006 I was in a terrible car accident. Brain hemorrhaging, memory loss, torn membranes, etc etc. like the previous comments, I was in a coma for 2 weeks, and when I awoke, I had to re learn everything. There are still noticeable side affects to this day, but everything is less obvious when I smoke, and I have an improved short term memory. Everyone has always thought my beliefs to be invalid, but I guess they’re the stupid ones.

  2. It is becoming obvious to the average citizen that we have been mis lead when it comes to the true medicinal value of cannabis. This entire movement shows us all that the power still resides in the voice of the people if we are able to speak as one. Follow the change, be the change. http://thelastamericanvagabond.com

  3. In early November 1985 I was involved in a multi car accident. I suffered brain swelling and was in a coma for 15 days. When I came out of the coma I was like a child again. I was 23 at the time. I had to learn to walk, talk, bathe, and even feed myself again. I went though some intense physical therapy. My mental state was weird. I knew all my family and friends, but I had no memory of what happened 3 weeks ago. I couldn’t tell you where I lived or worked. I didn’t know where I graduated high school. I didn’t even know what car I was driving when the accident occurred. I had no idea that I had been married at 19 and divorced 3 years later. I was released from the hospital just before Christmas 1985. Early January 1986, my brother came over to my house and offered to smoke a joint with me. I used marijuana before the accident, but hadn’t used any since then. I couldn’t even remember what it felt like to smoke. After the first couple of puffs off the joint, my memory came flooding back. My memory came back so suddenly that it almost sent me into a panic attack.

  4. No brain insult , but I do have severe Dystonia of the head and torso that standard treatments isn’t treating very well. My co – pays for all those drugs is $400 monthly + $1500 every three months for Botox injections from the neck down to my hips , and in between ribs on the front so I can maybe breathe without pain. All this really quits working the next step is an implanted pump to inject medicine into my brain. A puff of mmj about every 6 hours ( less if its high C BD ) and I can function . My Docs even approve. Problem is its illegal here and I usually can’t get high CBD. This is just crazy !

  5. I was in a very bad bicycle accident in June. I was diagnosed with a severe concussion then, and two weeks later was diagnosed with post-concussive disorder due to the debilitating migranes I was having daily. Excedrin, Tylenol, and asprin only made these migraines worse. Cannabis cured them, every time.

  6. I had a traumatic brain injury in 1995, coma 3 months docs told mother ta put in a home! She took me home in coma, i then woke up! I burned one as soon as i could! I can honestly say that i believe if not for mary jane I would still be in a wheelchair now only if it were legal i still gonna smoke it but it would be better!

  7. colorado love on

I am a colorado medical patient, I suffered severe head trauma that also effected my social drives. Medicating with mmj helped with the aftermath migraines and I was the most social guy in the room again after a few months of an injury that was projected to be years recovery. I’m a medical patient whose disablements are and still remain cured only through medical marijuana. By the way, I have met outstanding cancer patient survivors who 100% advocate the healing capabilities of mmj.
