Colorado Lawmakers Unanimously Approve Hemp Legalization

industrial hemp cultivation growing coloradoSenate Bill 241, a measure which would enable the state’s Department of Agriculture to license farmers to cultivate hemp beginning this year, has passed out of the House Agriculture, Livestock & Natural Resources Committee, as well as the House Appropriations Committee, both unanimously. In addition, the measure was approved through its 2nd reading in the full House of Representatives. The bill now awaits one more House vote, where its expected passage will send it to the governor for final approval, given that it’s already passed the Senate with a 34-1 vote.

Under the proposal farmers would have the option of applying for a 10-acre plot in order to study the viability of various hemp varieties, or they could apply for a larger, full-scale hemp farm - one that wouldn’t be limited by the number of plants, but rather by the THC content in said plants.

With the passage of Amendment 64, which legalized small amounts of marijuana for adults, hemp was removed from the state’s controlled substances list, though a provision of the initiative states that that hemp cultivation is contingent on legislative action – this bill would be that required action necessary to legalize hemp and authorize the state to begin distributing hemp licenses.

Recent congressional research indicates that the hemp market consists of over 25,000 various products. The same research found that America imports over $400 million worth of hemp from other countries.

  1. Potlitically Correct on

Hemp legalization is the real issue in the legalization movement. Marijuana is illegal because hemp is a better resource than oil, cotton, and timber and the corporations, in 1920 sought to remove hemp as competition. The laws against marijuana will never stop the use. The real loss is the renewable resource kept from the American economy

  2. I THINK it’s the LARGEST selling point in all actuality. I’ve argued over and over that when the American people figure out how STUPID they were to allow the Govt. to DUPE them on the DANGERS of this plant! They will be PISSED!!! God told us that he had put EVERY seed that we will need too SURVIVE, on this earth for us. The more uses that we find for this plant, the LESS TOXIC our environment will be and it will open TOTALLY NEW revenue streams not only for the Government but for the populace in general…

  3. In this case, I disagree with you. These are state politicians in a state which has legalized recreational use. I think one of the selling points of legalization is agricultural/industrial hemp.

  4. Choom Gang on

I see fields of green, I see dead people, I see reefer mad feds.

Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!

  5. If it’s sounds TOO GOOD to be true…. There’s got to be “a catch” to it somewhere!! Our politicians just AREN’T THIS SMART!!
