The 37 Colorado businesses which began selling recreational cannabis on January 1st made a combined total of roughly $5 million in sales in their first week, demonstrating a strong demand for legal cannabis, and ushering in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenue for the state.

Colorado, the first state to allow retail recreational cannabis sales to those 21 and older, has projected nearly $600 million in combined annual cannabis sales, a number that may turn out to be a conservative estimate.

“Every day that we’ve been in business since Jan. 1 has been better than my best day of business ever,” says Andy Williams, owner of Denver’s Medicine Man, a medical cannabis dispensary that now also sales recreational cannabis.

On average, shops sold between 30 and 60 pounds of cannabis in their initial week.

  1. This logic is compelling. Here is a lot of product that is now being grown by businesspeople who thirst for legitimacy and a lot of cash that will stay in the community and serve the public good.

  2. I know what I’ve spent in 1 year anniversary of AZ dispensary and they should feel good about the fact that even though i am spending the same amount of money i had to spare each month, their prices have cut my weekly usage from an ounce or more to a quarter or 2 if lucky… what if i could afford all i wanted and needed to maintain my health comfortably?

  3. That’s a great story angle – this is the first legal $5 mil that’s NOT going across the Mexican border to support the cartels.

  4. So how much money has gone under the mattresses of dealers and straight into other countries since the 60s? hmmmmm makes ya wonder how our economy started going in the crapper…..legalizing everywhere keeps that money circulating here. I know my money has gone elsewhere for 30 years!
