Colorado To Start A New Statewide Marijuana Education Campaign

lab rat colorado marijuana education campaignLast year the State of Colorado rolled out a marijuana education campaign that left a lot to be desired, and offended many people. The education campaign involved putting giant rat cages at schools and other public areas, complete with water bottles. The cages were meant to urge Colorado’s youth to not be lab rats. The education campaign was a complete failure, and was ridiculed by national media.

This year the State of Colorado is rolling out another education campaign, this time without any cages. The goal of the new campaign is to educate the public, and not to try to scare them. Per The Cannabist:

This year’s campaign will be called “Good to Know.” It’s aimed at residents and visitors about how to safely use the newly legal drug.

The campaign will cost about $6 million. The money comes from taxes on recreational marijuana.

Colorado’s chief medical officer says this year’s campaign will be “broader and more balanced” than last year’s lab rat campaign. That one was aimed at teens and tried to get them to avoid recreational pot use. But marijuana advocates found the lab rat campaign demeaning, especially its use of life-sized rat cages.

I will reserve judgement on the education campaign until it’s fully implemented. It sounds like a good campaign, and is certainly better than last year’s campaign. However, the same government behind last year’s education campaign are the same people behind this one, so who knows what could happen by the end of the year.

  1. Dr. Bob Melamede has announced that he is starting up the Cannabis Cable Network for just that purpose.

  2. I hope the education campaign IS fact based, and that they do their research. Despite the decades of bans on research, the list of research showing benefits is miles longer that the list of detriments, and even that short list is full of bullshit.

  3. Your right. I wish someone would make a compelling movie or TV series utilizing Jack Herer’s research. One part of cannabis education that I feel is really lacking is the history of how we got here. Most people haven’t got a clue.

  4. Travis Reeves on

Why dont we start a nation wide cannabis show that shows the real facts about cannabis, not bullshit propaganda. That would help out in the legalization movement tremendously!

  5. “New research from Harvard Medical School, in a comparison between
families with a history of schizophrenia and those without, finds little
support for marijuana use as a cause of schizophrenia.”

Another inconvenient fact for the prohibitionists. But of course they won’t let facts get in the way of their zeal to persecute the plant and punish those who benefit from it.

  6. Eh, I saw in another story about this that one of their ads will be “Does teen marijuana use really cause schizophrenia? Smoke it and find out” So the answer is that it’s the toned down reefer madness, but still a fear and propaganda campaign. It’s probably more likely to cause teens to take the challenge they’re being offered, more than anything.

  7. Will it be a true education campaign or an indoctrination campaign base on updated reefer madness propaganda. Mostly likely it will be the latter.

If it talks about cannabis as being a drug and not what it really is, a plant, then not much in the way of meaningful education about cannabis can be expected from such a campaign.
