Final Vote On Marijuana Decriminalization Today In Pittsburgh

pittsburgh pennsylvania marijuanaLast week on Wednesday the Pittsburgh City Council voted 6-1 to move forward with a marijuana decriminalization measure. Over a year ago the City of Philadelphia decriminalized marijuana, and has since saved over one million dollars. It is estimated that every marijuana arrest for simple possession costs $1,266 in law enforcement resources in Pennsylvania, and that giving someone a ticket only costs $20. A move to decriminalize in Pittsburgh would provide similar savings compared to Philadelphia.

Only one City Council member voted against the proposal. Per Trib Live:

Councilwoman Darlene Harris of Spring Hill, who voted “no” cited that as the reason.

“I cannot support a law that directly contradicts the law of the commonwealth,” she said. “This council is taking on things that are not local law.”

The bill passed 6-1 with Theresa Kail-Smith of Westwood abstaining. Council is scheduled for a final vote Monday.

I’m not as familiar with Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania state law, but I have to assume that there are things that the city does differently than the state does outside of marijuana policy. That’s true of virtually every large city in America. It’s not that the city wants to ‘stick it to the state,’ it’s that cities often know better ways of going about things than the state because the city deals with local issues more frequently. Marijuana decriminalization was good for Philadelphia, and so too will it be good for Pittsburgh if/when the measure is passed today.

  1. Well ok mr important! glad your so seasoned and cleared that right up! NOT!
Medical Cannabis you say? thats funny because ALL Cannabis usage is inherently medicinal and that mentality is impeding full Marijuana legalization which apparently you oppose.
I don’t think my statement concerning those city council piggys vote really being one to see if they get re-elected is foolish at all but right on the money. Marijuana liberty is now among the biggest civil rights issues of our time and if they vote against it they will likely cement their loss at any following attempt at re-election if their constituent base is dominantly Pro-Cannabis and they likely are just like the majority of all of North America is.
And NO it is NOT “..up to the state legislature to legalize any form of cannabis..”! They CAN pass such Pro-Cannabis legislation but the corrupt lying pigs refuse to do so and accurately represent their constituents and choose to oppress and enslave them with prohibiton, crime, prison, ect. WE The People all around the United States of America and Liberty are circumventing our corrupt legislatures lies and oppression with Citizen initiated ballot petitions for State Constitutional amendments! WE are getting it done and they NEVER have and NEVER will until we force them to and that is in the process of happening now all across North America! HOORAH!
And yes deary all my oh so upsetting to you appellations for the lying, murdering, extorting, imprisoning, life ruining, SCUMBAG Prohibitionist PIGS is my OPINION! SO WHAT!? You thinking that pleading to and bending over for such lying pigs will get you anywhere is your opinion and clearly has no basis in reality at this point nor what will gain the Cannabis Liberty Movement real progress in any reasonable amount of time if ever. They have proven their evil and treachery non-stop on this issue and many other issues.
Go cover some more “medical Cannabis” stuff loser! I and others with a brain will continue working for FULL,REAL, and TOTAL legalization of Cannabis! Medical usage is a misnomer and divisive to our Community!
And I’m not your fucking ‘mate’ you fucking prat! piss off!

  2. The council members were not voting to see who get re-elected. That is a comment that a foolish loser would say, but that is just my opinion, not a fact. I have been covering the Medical Cannabis movement in Pennsylvania for the past two years. It is up to the state legislature to legalize any form of cannabis, whether it is medical or recreational. PGH city council was merely taking advantage of a clever city government policy loophole and those voting no have the right to vote no. Lastly they are not “Marijuana hating lying pigs,” that an opinion, not a fact. Cheers mate.

  3. Those council members are really voting to see who gets re-elected and the ones who voted NO didn’t realize it!
Thanks for ratting yourselves out you Marijuana hating lying pigs on that city council! I hope your Pro-Cannabis constituents vote your lousy prohibitionist ass out of office so you can go work at your true calling; being a foolish loser.
