First Amendment Rights On Display This Weekend At Marijuana Rally In Boston

boston freedom rally masscann norml marijuanaJust eight days before the long-planned first-ever two-day MassCann/NORML Boston Freedom Rally on the Boston Common, the City of Boston denied the event’s permit. However, as predicted by the hard working people at MassCann NORML, the permit was issued allowing the event to take place. As described on the event’s Facebook page:

“After a hearing Friday afternoon pursuant to the injunction filed by MassCann, MassCann was granted a 2-day permit, but with a foreshortened schedule: Saturday noon to 6 p.m. instead of noon to 8 p.m., Sunday noon to 3 p.m. instead of noon to 6 p.m.”

The ruling was a victory for the First Amendment, as well as for the marijuana movement. It also wasn’t the first time that the City of Boston has tried to pull something like this, and been denied in the name of freedom. Per the MassCann NORML site:

“This is not the first time the City has attempted to derail a Freedom Rally. In 1997 and 1998 the City imposed unworkable and unconstitutional restrictions which were overturned by court injunction. In 2008, the City attempted to siphon off any proceeds from the rally and redirect them to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, a scheme that was also overturned by court injunction.”

I know a bunch of people that are attending the MassCann/NORML Boston Freedom Rally on the Boston Common today and tomorrow. If you would like to know more about the event, click here.

  1. Glad you received your “limited” permit anyway… Small progress is still progress. Congratulations.

  2. Raymond Tokareff on

For Thousands of years Cannabis has been used a Medicine ! Only in the early 20th Century a group of fanatics pushed their bigoted views on the entire world for fun and profit. The good news is in the early 21st Century the people over came this injustice! And in the all the people in the land got wonderful jobs taking care of the “Tree of Life” ,as we call it today in the 22nd Century.

  3. I was recently arrested in Gulf Shores, Alabama at a music festival for possesion of a gram of marijuana (going to see Tom Petty). I was PEACEFULLY WALKING SOBER into the gates before being searched and arrested. as I rode back with 3 officers through the festival grounds they each made crude comments to young girls in bikinis (it was on the beach). My court date has come and gone, I. Am on 2 years of good behavior, 6 months of random piss test, not allowed to consume alcohol, and will end up paying over 4k in court cost, legal fees, and misc cost for classes and drug screening. Does the punishment fit the crime? Not if you ask me! Peaceful music loving pot smoker arrested by sexist pigs! (Not as in police)
