High Times Amsterdam Cannabis Cup Proceeds Despite Threats By Mayor

high times cannabis cup denver strains marijuanaAmsterdam was once the ‘Mecca of marijuana.’ They had the best marijuana on the planet according to my friends that traveled there, and their laws were very liberal. After all, that’s why High Times always held their annual Cannabis Cup event there. But it appears that those days are gone, as this year’s Cannabis Cup has been the target of Amsterdam’s mayor. Per The Cannabist:

The Amsterdam ‎Cannabis Cup‬ was shut down on Sunday — its first day — for fear that “all participants would be arrested,” according to organizer High Times magazine.

The mag said the mayor’s office had issues with the legality of the Cannabis Cup.

“This morning we were informed that if were to proceed with the Cannabis Cup Expo the event would be shut down and all participants would be arrested,” High Times wrote on Sunday. “In the 26 years of the Cannabis Cup, there has never been any health or safety issues, nor has there been any lawlessness on the part of attendees.”

New rules in Amsterdam resulted in this year’s Cannabis Cup being dab free. Participants are not allowed to share marijuana either, which drastically changed the Cannabis Cup. Yet, despite the attempts by the Amsterdam mayor to crush the spirit of the Cup, the event moved on with seminars as planned. Per High Times:

It’s official: What should have been a death knell for this year’s Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam has only made us stronger.

All seminars held at the Melkweg today were packed. Cup attendees, even after all they have been through, remained in good spirits and eager to learn all the insider secrets (grow and otherwise) that were unveiled during the day.

Again, this Cup and been a difficult one so far, but we (both HIGH TIMES and all Cup attendees) are standing strong. Until tomorrow!

I’m curious to see what the future holds for the Amsterdam Cannabis Cup. With Amsterdam becoming more and more conservative with it’s marijuana laws, will the Cup continue to be held there? If so, will people keep attending the Cup knowing that it isn’t the same as it used to be? High Times is holding more and more Cups in America, so will people just start going to those instead of traveling to Amsterdam? While I only plan on attending Cups in America, it’s a sad day to know that the amazing event that has occurred in Amsterdam for so many years is not going to be the same as it used to be. In a way, it’s the end of an era.

Also, Nixon went to war with cancer (more like our bodies) providing entitlement spending for big pharma’s money addiction with no incentive for a cure. In 1974 it was discovered that cannabis cures skin cancer. President Ford would later put the kibosh on legitimate cannabinoid research to enable the profits of war to continue engineering hell on earth and return that same money back to politicians (‘legal’ bribery) for more custom entitlement provisions.

  2. Having parents with no id-1 gene gets you much further. The same is true of all cancerous conditions, being genetically fit is the primary controlling factor.

Vitamin D deficiency is corrected by not being a lazy asshat (going outside for a couple hours a day with some skin exposed to the sun) or by not being an African living in Seattle.

  3. It has absolutely nothing to do with the “Dutch” or the “Netherlands” per se. Branding is for fools

  4. Its called “the dominate culture.”

This is exactly what we should expect in a world where objectivity only applies when it is in the “users” favor.

  5. I wish I could go and be “arrested” there.

Too bad most other people are not willing to actually stand up for what they believe in

  6. Have the Amsterdam authorities also cracked down on BEER? I believe that if we knew the facts, we’d know that beer drinkers cause at least 100X as much trouble as potheads. Why no crackdown on beer (or wine and spirits)?

  7. Stop with the ”end of an era” and ”move to the US” shit, makes the culture and stoners in general seem secluded. We should all push for and stand together in times of need, and right now people need to see that everyone around the world wants more liberal ways of solving certain social issues a steadily declining number of the world population is against. I don’t know about you guys, but during the ruckus about legalizing it in the US I still signed certain international petitions to show my support and followed closely even though I’m from Norway and doing that shit did ”nothing” for me. Isn’t that sort of what all of this is about? To help each other out when we can, show support and unite as we grow towards a more compassionate and including goal that benefits everyone?

Not only that, pass on that “CBD has been shown to reduce breast cancer proliferation, invasion and metastasis by “turning off” the id-1 gene. Vitamin D also has this quality…” It seems that cannabis shares some qualities with Vitamin D. Backing the contention by many who may be vitamin D deficient that it is therapeutic.

  9. Visited the dam this summer, first time, don’t get me wrong it’s a must do…, but the dam is old news, time to move to the U.S.!!! No dabs, Hash was great but why no dabs makes no sense…, locals are anti time to bring to America…

  10. Actually, David I agree with you on that. I’ve frequented Amsterdam in my military days in the early eighties and multiple times this past decade. Amsterdam is a very magical place. Unfortunately in my humble observation, Amsterdam is getting a bit yuppiefied these days, but the magic is till there. I remember when it was a very hip ultra-left city back in the early 80’s. Dutch politics are complex and there’s been push and pull between right and left, though in past decade it seems that right has the upper hand and hence some of the roll back on cannabis freedoms there. I do hope in the near future that Dutch cities will have legal grow operations to take out the dodgy elements of the trade. I know that they’ve been striving for that.

  11. I returned form Amsterdam last month. I travel there fairly regularly as I have family in Switzerland and always look forward to spending a few days to enjoy Amsterdam before heading to to Lausanne. No American city I’ve visited can replicate the cool mellow vibe found inside of a Dutch coffee house.I’m sorry, but I don’t believe the Dutch need be begging Americans for anything.

  12. Yeah, it’s the end over there for now. We have plenty of legal states here so let’s see how long it takes to have the mayor begging HT to return next year.

  13. The Prohibitionists are involved in mass murder. The Reagan-Bush administration tried to suppress the finding that cannabis is effective against cancer. You can look it up. Of course the Democrats did nothing when they had a chance.

Cannabis cures cancer. Cancer kills 586,000 Americans every year. Every Prohibitionist is complicit in mass murder.

    Pass it on.
