Cannabis law reform and the emerging cannabis industry are definitely hot topics for the media these days.The New York Times’ landmark editorial, “Repeal Prohibition, Again“, certainly brought the debate regarding our nation’s marijuana laws to the forefront of the nation’s mainstream political discourse and the media outlets across the country are examining the ins and outs of all things cannabis. The Portland Business Journal recently launched an extensive look at the burgeoning cannabis industry in Portland, Oregon, featuring a local medical cannabis dispensary, garden supply store, a law firm that specializes in the cannabis industry, as well as the International Cannabis Business Conference (ICBC).

Tickets to the January cannabis business conference in Ashland cost $300. Alex Rogers, who operates medical marijuana clinics in Ashland and Eugene, worried that the price of the new conference he was organizing would be too steep.
Then it sold out, attracting 200 people. A second conference in March, this time in Eugene, attracted twice as many.
Now he’s expecting more than 1,000 marijuana-curious entrepreneurs to convene in September at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland for the first-ever International Cannabis Business Conference.
Anyone that has organized a major conference will tell you that a ton of work and investment is involved. The logistics of bringing in speakers from various parts of a state, let alone country, not to mention around the globe can be a time-consuming task in and of itself. Throw on top of that, managing everything that goes into setting up the proper venue to catering the food to overseeing the various topics and panels and the list really goes on and on. The work never truly gets finished until weeks after the event as you settle up invoices, compile and database folks suggestions and comments and even ensure that items get returned that made it to the lost and found box.
Ultimately, all of the work comes together to provide and educational and engaging experience that provides attendees with important knowledge and networking opportunities that will help them achieve their cannabis industry goals. If the attendees don’t receive valuable information and make connections that benefit their business, then the next conference won’t succeed and the goal of moving the cannabis industry further mainstream hasn’t been accomplished.
