Is Texas Looking To Legalize Marijuana?


Will Texas Join Other States That Are Trying To Introduce Marijuana Legalization Legislation?

It seems like almost every time we post something about legalization on Facebook, people from Texas say that they wish it was happening in their state. I can’t blame you guys, Texas marijuana laws are harsh! To make matters worse, Texas is not an initiative state, which makes marijuana reform even harder to do. The only route is through the legislature, which is very conservative and has killed previous attempts at marijuana reform. But I watched an encouraging news segment that suggests the Marijuana Policy Project is active in the state, and reform might be coming sooner than later…

    Having lived in Dallas, Texas I can tell you that the strip joints & liquor stores were out of the county and on the way home to those that would vote down any form of pot. I bet if Adam & Eve wore a Marijuana leaf instead of a fig leaf, they’d view it as God’s plant.

  8. you know, michelle, as long as the feds are leaving if up to each state, texas will never legalize it . I had one friend who was dying from a brain tumor, Then and only then did they give him the drug marinol( medicinal maryjane).I have to get it like every one else in TX. The illegal way. It sucks. The govt. here as you know, wants their piece of the pie as far as fining and jailing people, that is their pot of gold. They catch people coming out of the large cities, mostly the Houston area and El paso, close to the border, thinking they are solving the war on Marijuana. What a crock. I have been without now for about 6 weeks and I have been in chronic pain, depressed, angry, a raving insomniac and teetering on having a seizure, so , I really have to watch my step . When I go to Wa. I want to see for myself how they are setting it up. I know they are putting in the final touches regarding zoning, you know, not selling it near schools or parks. things like that. It will also be legal to grow your own up there. I Have an aunt who lives in CO. but she isn’t a smoker. We are just out of luck to live in the south under the power of the good “ol” Texas boys” and their power punches. I hate it here, I watch the local news and now the national news and see what are representatives do, like Cruz did yesterday, and they are making the entire state of texas look like the red neck state from Hell. It is ludicrous. I am embarrassed to say I was born here. My friends took off and moved to Hawaii a long time ago to get away from the repression they felt from living in Austin because they are gay. That is a shame. I don’t know what if anything will be done to help people like us who have seizures and could so get on with our life it we could indulge legally. I don’t think I have ever punched anyone out when I was high, but I have gotten pretty mean when I drink, so I don’t drink anymore. It is a shame but I will never shut up about it.,,, and I will get out of this state hopefully sooner than later.. Have to keep you posted on what I see and here when I get back form up there.. Do you live in or around one of the big cities in Texas? we will have to keep in touch. Only we can help ourselves, because these backward people running our state govt. are a watercooler joke at best. Hang in there, girl………..

Hi how are you ? my name is Michele I think it would also be a good Idea , who knows if they would do it here , but yeah I saw that also with that 2 year old girl right away she stoped having so many siezures a day and went to having only a few and even got her speach back right away , as long as you use it the right way there is nothing wrong with doing that , and it can help in many ways as well I also have Epilepsy , I have had it since I was 7 months old , I had a reaction to a DPT Vaccince and no Medication has ever helped ,me instead just made things worse , they have put me on every medication there is for Epilepsy , and none have done me any good we wanted to try that but texas does not do that yet , only Colorado ,and a few other states and then you even have to live there to be able to do it , so hopefully they will accept to do that , they do so many other stuppid things and worse why cant they also do good , but using it in the right way , “

  12. Austin will get it legalized if any city in Texas can. They are progressive and educated and usually get what they set out to. They are not just a bunch of students but respectable, wealthy baby boomers. They will explain their wants and if you did not understand, they will explain it louder next time.   14. It has noting to do with Christianity other than using it as a shield Congress uses to justify their actions. If NORML and The MMP would simply pay the reelection funds $1,000,000 to each member of the Republican Party, we would be done with this issue. Currently, they get donations from the Mary J organizations to legalize it and donations from the Pharmacy and Liquor lobbyists (who have the most to lose). The middle is a good place to be.

    yeah I am in texas, lived in seatlle for many years as well as bothell, Everett, Redmond, Kirkland, Edmonds, Union, and Belfair, so I know what I am getting into… the only reason I left was because of a freebase addict husband. I had to leave the state cause that dude would have killed me . I am going to look at homes in ocean shores and will be there for 10 days.. get into SeaTac on the 8th, staying at the ramada inn SeaTac and then on to ocean shores the following day…. I hope to hell they do not re legalize it.. cause I don’t want to live in new mexico ,arizona or Oregon (too expensive there) I love Washington and would never have left.. however Colorado might be an option… I have an aunt there and I do not believe in god, I believe in the universe.. and love my pot for all the reasons you obviously know about

    hey will, you are right but what the scientist are saying now that people who have epilepsy or seizure disorder , like I have, that it can basically make you seizure free. You are saying a lot of right things about the two most dangerous drugs ,liquor and tobacco which kill thousands of people a year. They just did a study on a child who was suffering from 100 to 200 seizures a day by making drops of flavorful THC and that child became almost seizure free IMMEDIATLY. Not to mention what it does for chronic pain patients, cancer patients, glaucoma or just having a really cool laid back mellow time.. instead of drinking like a fish and spending money on liquor at bars,, toke a little order a soda with lime (to prevent cotton mouth) and just watch all the people acting crazy stupid drunk.. it is a lot of fun to be an observer that an out of control participant. I quit drinking about 5 years ago and even if I have only one drink, I am ready for my coca cola or ice tea…. try it, you might change your mind. Pot as a gateway drug, strickly (msp) political!! Pot is and always has been my drug of choice and I am 55 and have been toking since I was 14….and I am still cognicent as can be, maybe not the best speller….hahaha and I am going to Washington state in Nov. to hopefully move and leave the state of texas like dust in the wind.. one toke over the line , baby!!

    Karen, i am an alaskan that moved to washington this spring. But now I hear my state is going to vote to re-legalize the stuff. Yeah alaska use to have it legal, but supposedly the same jerk that got rid squatters rights also got rid of the legalization back in 1990 (i think). So yeah, I would say stay in your state cause it might be legal soon, but you live in texas huh. Texan refugees are everywhere. But if you come to the northwest, we only ask that you are not racist, you learn how to recycle, and please if you are baptist, do not insist on converting the first nations (“indians”). Come to think of it, we already have too many fanatics here. But if you aren’t a fanatical christian and you believe in “live and let live”, Washington is a beautiful place with peace lovin people. I once lived in a small town in alaska where the local baptist minister handed out death threats to everyone saying that his god orders him to kill all pagans and non-believers during Judgement day.     I once had to squeeze a half ounce of weed between my but cheeks one night on a texas beach, because pigs smelled my weed down the coast. after a thourough pat down but no cavity search, they let me be. Escorted me back to the mainland; and soon I was home toking up and laughing.

  31. I live in Texas, and am a Christian Conservative and I can see both sides of the legalization/ decriminalization debate. In my opinion, legalization and regulation of pot would be very beneficial to getting rid of the cartels along the border. It’s simple, if there is no demand of foreign pot, then there would be no need for the cartels to supply their product. Crack down on drugs like meth, cocaine, and heroine, those are real narcotics and cause real problems. Legalize pot and close off the Mexican border. Build a nice tall brick wall to help keep the cartels out, make it bullet and bomb resistant and have watchtowers all along the wall. Doing so would definitely reduce crime by keeping the Mexican cartels and street gangs out of our country. Let Mexico deal with them!

    Legalizing pot would also create jobs. there would be those who produce the plant, government officials to inspect the product, and people will be needed to work in dispensaries. Yes, Texas IS an agricultural state… Pot is an agricultural product… It only makes sense!

  37. you would be so surprised how many Christians are in favor of legalizing marijuana in my church alone in Texas we have a letter writing campaign to our reps in Austin to reform Texas Marijuana laws so don’t blame it on Christians for stopping the laws from being passed. I know of Two more that are doing the same.

  38. I used to live in a small drug laden town in IA. All of the hard and harmful drugs were everywhere. Marijuana too. Parents wanted their children to smoke their marijuana at home, because if their children smoked it outside of home they would be smoking it with weed that had been laced and would also be taking everything else, every harmful and addictive drug that exists. The local police knew that and were reluctant to arrest kids for smoking weed at home.

  40. You can abuse any substance. They have addiction counseling for marijuana too. Some people have addictive personalities. Marijuana is not perfect. I had used marijuana as a medication, and it had saved my life. People can be addicted to anything, including sex. I had a neighbor, a girl (a child) who was a sex addict, many years ago, living up the street. She died of AIDS. If you use marijuana to avoid people, it is harmful to you. Marijuana is an excellent social drug. It is the person, and not the drug, which is the addiction problem. If weed is your addiction, then it is the marijuana which your problem. No one dies of marijuana, but it can be your addictive problem.
    Some people are addicted to food. The food is their ‘substance’, they can die of obesity.
    I had used a lot of marijuana, perhaps more than you.
    I had smoked it every waking moment. I was always wasted. That was too much THC for me. I had lived as happy, goody blob, unable to function. Someone had to take me to the bathroom, because I was so wasted that couldn’t figure out how to negotiate to get upstairs. If it were not for marijuana, I would have been dead. I have epilepsy, with seizures so often that it stopped my breathing. The doctors had no medications to treat me. I turned to medical marijuana. I worked. Perfectly. I had no seizures, none. No headaches, no pain, nothing. And no depression. I could think clearly, and I had a memory. It was a miracle. Too much THC will cause seizures. THC causes euphoria. To treat epilepsy, you should use only a small dose, just enough to relax the brain. High is inviting, so inviting. I smoked a lot, because I so loved the high. I smoked every moment, every waking second. I had smoked so much that the THC was causing more seizures. I had used more marijuana to try control the additional seizures. I could afford as much as marijuana as I wanted, my source transported weed, and we were friends. For me marijuana was free He paid for his wife’s marijuana, she was also a medical patient, to her treat pain from a pinched nerve in her spine.
    I had to stop using marijuana because I was using so much that I couldn’t operate my vape, or hold a joint. After the level of THC had dropped, I felt human again, (I was able to function and think). I started using marijuana once again, but I used it differently. Instead of trying to prevent seizures, I used it to stop them once they began. Just enough to relax the brain. One joint (or a small amount in my vape) stopped them for a few hours. I had total control, no problems, and I had a clear mind (not a living blob). I had spoken to other medical marijuana patients (with other medical conditions). We all share the same problem. Too much marijuana makes you too fckted up to allow you to function. Some people, such as pain patients (and cancer patients), require a lot of THC to treat them. Many patients today need the CBD, and little or no THC. My doctor would love to be able to write for CBD oil for his patients. I wish that I had marijuana for my late mother, because she had died of cancer, and would have been helped by marijuana. Mom would never want to live stoned, nor high. They have low THC and high CBD strains for some people available, but they are illegal in the United States. (These strains are still grown here, and fortunate patients have access to them). Medical marijuana is not great marijuana that gives you a better high. Medical marijuana is intended to be therapeutic and has both a high level CBD (and for some ultra high levels of THC). CBD is a therapeutic metabolite (so too is THC – except for some special strains grown for patients who can not have any THC). CBD does NOT get you high (CBD brings you down). Medical marijuana is also not full of junk (chemicals). CBN is a metabolite in marijuana that makes you high, but alters how you metabolize THC. It is unwanted in medical marijuana.
    The largest cohort of people whom are new to marijuana who using marijuana for medical use are people age 40 – up. People have discovered medical marijuana (according to the Association for Retired Persons (AARP), an organization representing some 5 million people of retirement age).
    Marijuana is a folk drug, and not just a social drug. Despite the feds efforts, it isn’t going to disappear. The Federal government is not going to send a wave of soldiers to ‘infiltrate and destroy’ mom and pop, granny, and gramps. A low THC, and high CBD marijuana has a Hugh demand. Grandma and Grand-dad don’t want to party. These strains are available as an Rx medication in some countries. I had used marijuana as a medication a long time ago. Today they have Rx drugs that help me. They have awful side effects, but I can not be arrested. My source is no longer available, he had to run to avoid being arrested. That was a long time ago, he never stayed in one place for very long.

    I don’t think that marijuana should be legal for children. Marijuana causes memory burn, and kids need an unimpaired mind. I also believe that you do not have a right to use recreational marijuana (smoke it that is), if you are in public. Marijuana smells (if smoked). You should not have to be subject to that smell just because you are in public. If you are in the privacy of your own home, that is a different matter. What you do, unless you are violating some (other) law, harming someone, or planning to harm others is your business.

  48. Recreational marijuana can be abused. It depends on how and when it is taken. Remember beer and picnics? If you have a few beers at a picnic, it is part of a social event. If you go off alone and drink, you have a substance problem. If you smoke some weed with friends at a party, it is a social event, if you smoke alone, it is a substance problem.

  58. Yes it’s very simple marijuana has a male and a female plant. The male produces “hemp” & the female is the one who gets you high & produces (weed) THC. You won’t find this in the male. If he had a long history of DUI for alcohol he and he was coming to work drunk and the employers did nothing and did not run regular drug/alcohol screenings they would have been just as responsible. Also, your article states that he was under the influence of codeine as well as marijuana. Your argument that this is a good reason to keep pot illegal is invalid as it does not address the actual issue.

    Any mood altering substance can be misused or abused with tragic results, but we do not criminalize them for that reason alone. Walk through your local pharmacy and you will see dozens of otc medications that are abused everyday. Try the stationary or hardware section of the local Walmart to find other substances that are abused as well. The government cannot keep people from being stupid and irresponsible, they can only hold them liable after the fact.

    If you want to argue against the decriminalization of marijuana you need to find a better argument.

    Big Pharma would love to sell you marijuana, because they stand to make billions from it. Biomass farmers of corn would not want hemp, nor would cotton growers or would growers of trees. The plastic source – petroleum would not be afraid of it, because all rubber and plastic is, and always will be, made from petroleum or natural gas fuel. I can’t be arrested for the Rx drugs, so I take them. Marijuana worked a lot better than the many drugs that I take today, and it is not harmful like my Rx drugs, it has no toxic side effects, nor is it a depressant. My doctor wishes that he could prescribe CBD oil for all of his patients. Federal laws suck. I wish that I diplomatic immunity so that I could use it in the privacy of my own home, but I don’t, nor do I wish to be arrested. Pharma pills I must take. I really don’t want be stoned, just healthy.

    It’s upsetting and mind-boggling the number of people in this world who believe they know the “correct” way to live and try to impose their faux morality on others, which ironically results in untold pain and suffering.     There are so many reasons to legalize — one must merely open their eyes.     Granted, most of these benefits would be even greater from legalizing or at least decriminalizing all drugs, but I won’t even get into arguing that now — it’s too much for most folks in this country to even argue in a mature way at this point in time.

    A routine building demolition turned into tragedy this week in Philadelphia when the building that was being torn down collapsed into a Salvation Army store, killing six people and injuring a dozen more. A few decades ago I was most fortunate to move to San Francisco California and lived right down the road from Denis Peron, founder of California’s proposition 215,the Medical Marijuana Initiative.I was able to obtain a Cannabis Medical Card because I have kidney stones,a couple years later in 2010 they operated me for Pancreatic Cancer,and till this very day I know that if I had not been smoking any of the good stuff that I would have never found out that I had Pancreatic Cancer. Sorry to say that I had to move back to Texas in 2010 and now I have to take all different kinds of medications that give me side effects that I am not used to! So I sure wish that Texas States Legislatures would hurry up and make marijuana Legal,I can’t wait to resume smoking some good old joints again!

  161. I have always been completely opposed to marijuana, so much in fact that the way I felt about it caused problems between my husband and I. I was diagnosed with IIH in August of 2012 along with that came vision problems and headaches that literally made me sick. The medication that was prescribed didnt work and the next ones stronger that I was to be prescribed were so strong and highly addictive that I really didnt want to even attempt them. After more than a week of my husband coming home from work and finding me crying and hadnt got out of bed all day. I couldnt even function to do normal activities. My husband suggested that I smoke. He practically had to force me since weed had never been something that I had ever done, but afterwards I am a firm believer that Yes it should be legalized at least for medical reasons if not completely…. It is such a shame that all of the medicatioms that I have to take on a daily basis and is so expensive that it doesnt actually work but something that is naturally grown does work but it is illegal.

Pharmaceutical companies farm out some of the worst possible “medications” to the public with side effect lists as long as my arm. Many of these drugs have side effects that include suicide and violent behavior. Marijuana has side effects as well but very few experience negative side effects. Most just get hungry.

  183. I feel your pain – I’m in my 50’s and vape for pain – and to feel good. I didn’t start up again (from my teen use) till 2 yrs ago – terrible time finding a supply. I looked for the biker type – covered in jailhouse tats and kept asking for weed. Finally found one willing to sell to a straight laced “stand up” white guy from the burbs. It was not steady supply though. I Finally had to buy seeds online and start my own clandestine grow – in an old locked frig in the garage with a filter on top. Took a long time to get a first crop but it was well worth it. With 3 little autos grown under 100 watts of LED’s I raised 88 grams (dry weight) which will last me almost 2 years of vaping. I also save the Vape waste – grind it up and slip a tablespoon in my hot tea – all day greatness!

    There are more harsh chemicals in the things we.use in our daily lives that are allowed , yet a simple plant, a herb is a threat to our state? Doesn’t make sense, correct?   197. I have lived i Texas m whole life. I sufferfrom MANY MAJOR medica illnesse some sh as Crohn’s, Severe Intractable Migraines, I have had 5 MAJOR operation on my lungs and rach has casued MAJOR nerve damage. I have to hav aother surgery this year to repair a leak in my left lung. That surgery will be 1+ hours long. I have ben tking STRONG opiod pain meds for the pain and nausea or years. Ihave NO appetite. I have only smoked once in my life and it was one time about 4 years ago, but wassome RALLY bad cheap stff, got NOTHING from it. Would like t try to REAL stuff to see if I could drop a lot of this otherbad stuff going into me. Damned government always holding something that could potentially help SO many people. My dad has cancer and is undergoing chemo, he cany eat, nauseated ALL day, think it would really benft him as well. Help gain some weght back on him.. Just pisses me off…

Legalize in Texas…might be hard, since this is a redneck, Republican state…but the youngsters are becoming more and more democratic…so theres a chance…too late for me, I’m in my 60s but I smoked some (well, more than some) 40 years ago while in college and would love some for my aches and pains but no idea where to get any.

  209. Simple possession of cannabis in Austin is given a low priority by APD. But outside of Travis County even that is still a big deal for LEO’s. We have NORML chapters throughout the state as well as the Texas Hemp Campaign (THC), and they’re doing what they can. But by and large, Texans statewide are some of the most retarded people I’ve ever met. Retarded by the climate, by their religious upbringing, by the poor education systems …. Changing minds here is a daunting task. Since much of the population has a law & order mentality, efforts by LEAP could go a long way in that regard.

  210. While it would be nice for Texas to legalize. I wonder if they should do it piecemeal. Like legalizing it in Austin, El Paso, San Antonio and other large urban areas, first. My state of Lousiana would probably be one of the last to legalize, but I wonder if New Orleans which marches to the beat of a different drummer could possibly do it much sooner. Mayor Landrieu did make marijuana no longer to be a mandatory arrestable offense in 2011. A baby step, but a step nonetheless. I think that the “blue” enclaves in the south should try legalization first, until the rest of the “red” south has the maturity to catch up. That would be my southern strategy.
