Marijuana Legalization Bill Introduced In Michigan

michigan marijuanaI receive the following legislative alert:

Yesterday, Rep. Jeff Irwin introduced HB 4877, a bill that would end marijuana prohibition in Michigan and treat cannabis similarly to alcohol. Marijuana prohibition is just as destructive, costly, and ineffective as alcohol prohibition, and it’s time for Michigan to choose a better path.

Please take a moment to encourage your representative and senator to support HB 4877.

This historic bill would provide protections for Michiganders and state visitors aged 21 and over, license and regulate businesses, establish testing requirements for cannabis, and many other sensible provisions. Six representatives joined with Rep. Irwin in support, including Reps. Singh, Robinson, Hovey-Wright, Chang, Hoadley, and Roberts.

Thank you to all who reached out to your own representative seeking co-sponsorship for this important legislation.

In addition to Rep. Irwin’s bill, two efforts are currently underway in Michigan to legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana for adults through the voter initiative process. Michigan now has several options to end the failed policy of prohibition, and 2016 could be the year Michigan joins those that have chosen a better path.

Please ask your legislators to support this important bill, and help spread the word by passing this message to friends, family, and supporters in Michigan!

  1. End the war on “pot”. I just had my 1st scary encounter with Michigan’s special task force DRANO a few weeks back and all I had was the medicine I was entitled too. They have bigger and worse people to harass like coke heroin crack and meth dealers but yet will turn my familes world upside down. Shm this war on marijuana needs to end

  2. SUPPORT HB4788! End the injustice of prohibition. Call your friends to talk with their representative to support the bill! The uphill battle for legalization continues. Join the movement.

  3. Prohibition doesn’t work. Between 1969 and 2013, adults who have admitted to marijuana use has increased dramatically over the years. 1969- 4% polled admitted to having used it. 1973, 2 years after the controlled substance act, that number increased to 11%. 2013 that number has held relatively stable at 38%. That represents a 950% increase since 1969. To further support how rediculous it is to keep cannabis illegal…. There have been zero fatal cannabis overdoses…. Zero cannabis overdoses that truly required advanced/critical care in a hospital. Meanwhile, since 1969, a perfectly legal substance has been directly responsible for over 3.3 million deaths…. That substance is Alcohol. If we as a society, are going to allow a known killer be legal for adults, why would we continue to keep a substance infinitely safer a crime? Finally, the federal cost to tax payers, since 1971, has cost us more than 1.5 trillion dollars, not including state money, county money, city money, nor the cost to incarcerate. That’s right, 1.5 trillion dollars, 950% increase in usage, all for a substance that has never caused a fatal overdose in its 10,000 years of human use! Insanity to keep this cannabis prohibition alive? You decide!

  4. If your from Michigan please take time to read and cluck the link to contact a rep. It’s quick and simple 2 minutes of your time if you know someone in Michigan send them a link or tell them. Just remember it’s one more state in the fight for National legalization and the stopping of arrests and incarceration for drug only offenses.
