New Oregon Law Eases Concealed Gun Restriction For Marijuana Offenders

new approach oregon marijuana legalizationIn most states, if you have a marijuana charge on your record, you cannot get a concealed handgun permit. In Oregon, which was the first state to decriminalize marijuana possession, you could have one minor marijuana charge on your record and still be eligible for a concealed handgun permit. However, you could not have a charge from out of state in addition to one charge in state. That law was changed this last week. Per KGW:

Oregon attracts many people from elsewhere, and a new law taking effect New Year’s Day allows some of them to get a concealed handgun license.

State law generally prohibits people with drug convictions from getting a license to carry a concealed handgun. But Oregon reduced the severity of marijuana possession charges in 1973, and has long allowed residents with one minor pot offense to obtain a license.

That exception, however, did not apply to Oregonians who got caught with an identical amount of marijuana in another state.

The new law went into effect last week on Thursday, January 1. I’m curious to see how many people this affects. I’d imagine it will be awhile before any statistics are released involving the change in law. This is a great thing for marijuana consumers that support gun rights.

  1. The most danger that you face from being shot by a gun is the police, drunken people, and kids of parents that have poor or nonexistent parenting skills

  2. Constitutional rights shall not be infringed, period !!

I find it quite disconcerting that many of the states taking the lead in medicinal cannabis have enacted the most restrictive anti-firearm laws in the US.

Congratulations Oregon for beginning to reverse this trend.

Without continuous, overwhelming support for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Americans would no longer possess the freedoms necessary to lobby / vote for cannabis legalization.

    Rights are rights !
