New Study Finds Cannabis May Provide Treatment For Skin Diseases

new study, recently published online in the British Journal of Pharmacology, details how cannabinoids can play a role in the treatment of skin diseases.

Researchers looked at the impact of phytocannabinoids (plant-derived cannabinoids, rather than synthetic counterparts) on epigenetic regulation of skin differentiation genes.

The study found that both cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG), “significantly reduced the expression of all genes tested via increased DNA methylation for keratin 10 gene”.

The CBD was found to reduce keratin 10 mRNA through stimulating type-1 cannabinoid (CB1) receptors, while the CBG was found to act through a secondary method that did not engage the CB1 or CB2 receptors of keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). It was also revealed that cannabidiol increased global DNA methylation levels.

The study concludes that cannabis could act as a primary treatment for epidermal ailments:

“These findings identify the phytocannabinoids cannabidiol and cannabigerol as transcriptional repressors that can control cell proliferation and differentiation, suggesting (especially for cannabidiol) a possible exploitation as lead compounds to be used in the development of novel therapeutics for skin diseases.”

This report was conducted by researchers at the University of Teramo, the Campus Bio-Medico University and the Santa Lucia Foundation, all located in Italy.

  1. Hi. I don’t know if you will get this being so long ago but I have just been diagnosed with sweets syndrome after 8 years of no answers.
My case is unusual as it only effects the right side of my face and no where else. The lesions used to come up once every 2 years but now it’s becoming more frequent and more aggressive.
I have smoked marijuana for a number of years and after reading some info I do wonder if my use has been the reason I haven’t had it as bad as it should have been. And as in smoking less these days it’s coming up in more than one spot at a time which it wasn’t before.
Have you had any more answers regarding this?
I’d love to hear from you. I’m currently being pumped full of steroids but I can feel the crazy coming.
Have you had any more luck with finding a cure as such? I’m at wits end and don’t even want to leave the house these days.

  2. I have sweet’s syndrome short for Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis which is a very rare autoimmune dermatologic skin disorder and would like to know if medical marijuana or hemp oil / other topicals have helped anyone with a similar autoimmune skin disorder. If so what types or doses help. 24 years of this disease and I keep looking for answers to reduce flares.

  3. I suffered eczema on my hands for over 20 years and never could get rid of it on my fingertips. When I gave up my 25 year vegan diet and went grain-free it all cleared up completely. (and almost immediately) Try a month without grain.

I have used canna-oil to eliminate moles and warts. A friend quite dramatically healed a cancer on his nose and I have also used it to heal a dry and dark patch of sun damage on my nose. Several of my acquaintances have used it successfully to heal skin problems that seemed untreatable.

  4. Maybe why since I started smoking again my Lupus lesions have decreased so much ;-) Sucks to be considered “beautiful for someone who looks like a leper” as once told me during a really bad SLE flare :-/

  5. I’ve got eczema on my fingertips, which is very hard to live with. It handicaps me in a myriad of ways. If CBD and CBG can help, I’d be forever grateful!

  6. Does it counteract the effects of psoriasis? If a treatment could be derived from this plant for that affliction then this is truly gods biggest gifts to man. We must use it!

  7. We’ve noticed that at Albany’s Canna Kitchen & Research, LLC. Our Super Salve and Face Oil both do incredible things for the skin! Seriously noticeable, positive differences just to the casual observer. This is an amazing plant and I look forward to when it is set free to heal the people!
