New York State Assembly Approves Medical Marijuana Measure

new york medical marijuanaOnly several hours after Governor Chafee put his signature on decriminalization in Rhode Island, the New York state Assembly approved AB 7347.

The bill, modeled on Rhode Island’s law, requires patients to have a physician or licensed prescriber certify their need for marijuana for treatment of a statutorily defined “serious medical condition.” Patients must then file their certification with the Department of Health and receive a registration card from the state. Possession would be limited to two and a half ounces.

This marks the third time the Assembly has passed such a measure. In previous years similar legislation has stalled in the Senate. Action is now awaited on AB 7347’s companion legislation, Senate Bill 2774.

The bill is supported by: the Medical Society of the State of New York, the New York State Nurses Association, the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of New York State, Statewide Senior Action Council, Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the New York AIDS Coalition, the New York State AIDS Institute Advisory Council, the Oncology Nursing Association (New York State chapter), the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the American Academy of HIV Medicine, and Housing Works. Nationally, medical use of marijuana is supported by the American Public Health Association, the American Bar Association, and the Lymphoma Foundation of America, among others.

  1. This is just another scam proposal. how does one acquire 2.5 ounces and who do they acquire it from? Whoever they get it from is at risk for going to jail because that person must have more than 2.5 ounces. All the medical marijuana bills are shams because they won’t stop incarcerations> The politicians try to look like they are giving the people what they want when in reality none of their plans work for the people. Marijuana patients should be allowed to grow their own unregulated. Anyone who grows knows you can’t just grow 2.5 ounces. Once again the politicians try to look good like they are doing something when in reality they pass a worthless bill. Free All Marijuana Prisoners Now since New York State knows “Scientific evidence clearly shows no significant harm or no harm at all from marijuana use” so why are our prisons full of nonviolent marijuana users? -Joe Barton

  2. Unfortunately due to the fact that Cuomo is considering his future as a possible President. He most likely wont sign the bill. A great example of a politician considering his future instead of the 60 to 80% approval among NY ers for the bill to pass. As long as his future is in question, the people will not get what they want. Gov. Cuomo, do whats best for your people!! Not whats best for YOU!!!!!
