The organization Oklahomans for Health officially launched its petition drive to legalize medical cannabis last week with a press conference held by Senator Constance Johnson, a longtime supporter of legalizing medical cannabis.

Advocates will be required to collect roughly 155,000 valid signatures in order for the initiative to qualify for this November’s ballot.

Under the proposed law, the possession, use and state-licensed distribution of cannabis will be legal for those with a qualifying medical cannabis, such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and multiple sclerosis, as long as they receive a recommendation from a physician. The initiative – which is a constitutional amendment – was recently approved by the Oklahoma Secretary of State, giving the group the go-ahead to begin collecting signatures.

  1. Johnny..you have your facts a bit wrong. Connie did sponsor a petition for circulation but it was 55 pages long and has since been dropped. I am the chair of Oklahomans for Health and we are the proponent (sponsor) of the medical petition currently circulating in Oklahoma. We have a 90 days window to get 155,000+ signatures. Oklahoma has a VERY high signature burden. Our petition is solid and can be read at our website http://www.oklahomansforhealth.com. Further, our petition also has a decrim provisions (sort of masked…no card but state a valid condition…), tracks plants by weight (not individually),and some other nice things. Our signature window ends on 8/16. We are currently at about the 100,000 signature mark (conservatively) and could really use help for this final push. This has been a completely grassroots effort, and, believe it or not, we have done this with very few donors and on a shoestring…spending to date is right around $40k.

What we would like to do is to raise somewhere between $50k and $400k for this final push. We are confident we can make it we just really need some financial help. $100k would enable us to bring in paid signature gathers from Oregon and knock this out…

ANY help you can rally would be greatly appreciated!! You can contact us at 918-949-6699 or via email at chip@oklahomansforhealth.com

  2. I’m always skeptical whenever I see a new state considering medical marijuana because so many, particularly in the South, are only for the low THC and limited ailments variety. This looks like the real deal. Good luck OK.
