Oregon Department Of Agriculture: Don’t Use Pesticides On Marijuana

For a very long time no one knew what was on/in their marijuana. There were many years where testing laboratories didn’t exist unlike today. Unless you personally grew the marijuana, or knew and could trust the person growing the marijuana, there was virtually now way to know exactly what you were smoking. My friends and I would often talk about what could potentially be on the cannabis we were consuming, but we would always proceed forward with blind faith, which admittedly was not the best strategy. But, that’s how it was when you obtained marijuana via the black market and you didn’t always know where the marijuana originated from.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture recently came out with a warning to all marijuana growers in Oregon – no pesticides. Period. Below is an explanation, via Oregon Live:

The Oregon Department of Agriculture is warning marijuana growers to stop using illegal pesticides, while the state scrambles to put together a list of acceptable chemicals.

The federal government puts pesticides through tests that determine in what context a chemical may be used in agriculture and how much may be used. Those accepted uses are then listed on the label of the pesticide.

However, because cannabis is an illegal substance according to federal laws, there are no approved pesticides to use in marijuana cultivation. So, while many growers use pesticides, the application is technically against the law.

“It is important to note, pesticide applications that do not follow the pesticide product label pose risks to public health and safety and are a violation of state and federal law. THE LABEL IS THE LAW,” says a letter being sent to every permitted marijuana grower in Oregon.

The average cannabis consumer these days is getting more and more sophisticated and educated everyday that goes by in states where marijuana reform victories have occurred. Long gone are the days when everyone in America just blindly consumed whatever they were sold via the black market. I know a lot of people that only consume local, organic food. But they don’t always have the same standard for the cannabis they consume, which is something that I think will become more and more rare going forward. I know that I personally like to know exactly what I’m smoking, and if I hear of anything funky being sprayed on, or fed to, the marijuana that is being presented to me for consumption, I’ll respectfully pass.

  2. Spot on man. Keep your girls healthy and they’ll take care of themselves as nature intended.

  3. I’m glad the industry is moving away from harmful chemicals. If you keep your girls healthy they can fight off almost any outside attacker like mildew and mites. I’ve started using Solution 3 on my grow and even with the stresses of growing indoors, my ladies don’t have any problems. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure…or whatever.

Johnny Green is focused on nuances of public policy but the article below includes an obvious logical contradiction: In one place it says “follow the label” on pesticides and in another it says “no pesticides whatever.” Such ignorance ! Dosage is everything and anything in sufficient concentration can be toxic, even lethal. The pesticide concentrations/dosage stated on labels are appropriate for most everything most people eat and drink daily. If the world would suddenly go fanatically organic, half the people in the world would starve in a month. Organic in moderation is a good idea but nothing is so right we cannot get too much of it. The perfect has become the enemy of the good in the production of the sacred herb.

    Predator bugs. Predator mites, mite destroyers, ladybugs, geem lacewings etc. Neem, hot pepper spray and esential oils as well

  6. If you’re able to start your ‘girls’ off right, they have a remarkable ability to fend off most critters that wish to eat them. As an instance, the resin glands alone act as a major deterrent, so if you can get them off to a good healthy start they are very resilient. Also, growing outdoors you have the amazing blend of healing sun and stable roots…always plant in ground :O)
    In my state,I used to capitalize the word State..had meaning, dignity and purpose..no more, anyway in my state they allow 200! Yep, two hundred chemicals that no sane person would ever use on consumable products.
    I have had some Verm wilt but nothing much else, always get Lady bugs into the environment asap, they lay their egg cases and you have rotating continuous bug eaters! Watch for leaf curlers and hoppers…basically? Have fun and out grow the bastards :O)

  7. We grow outdoors and we never intervene with any pest control of any sort. If we can learn to create a rich and diverse soil ecology plants that grow have no issues. We use nothing from the grow store to amend or intervene. There are ways to care for soil that that require nothing from the industrial world of nutrients.   8. Being an veganic indoor grower in Nevada with strict quality control, I’ve always wondered how outdoor growers get through the season without there crops getting eaten up and being full of pests. Please someone enlighten me…..

    This is worth repeating… below is the recipe from the original post.

    Follow the instructions. IT WORKS!


    Making the Calicleaner

    1.) Get a sauce pan – fill with one pint of water – put on lowest flame possible (do not boil !!!).
    2.) Chop 4 -5 Habanera peppers fine. Chop open seeds and central membranes, as the power lies there.
    3.) Simmer chopped peppers for 20 minutes – making sure not to boil (you will destroy the active proteins).
    4.) When you put your head over the pan and the wispy-steam stings your eyes, the Calicleaner is ready.
    5.) Pour the Calicleaner through a fine mesh strainer – a little fine grit is OK – let cool in a clean bowl.
    6.) Pour room temperature contents in a mister spray bottle. Your are ready to apply.

    HOW TO APPLY Calicleaner
    1.) Put on gloves, and wear a mask, or at least put a bandana around your nose and mouth.
    2.) Turn off all fans – you do not want this spray in your eyes!!!
    3.) Spray the bottom of EVERY leaf – starting with the bottom leaves first, work up to the top.
    4.) After the bottoms are done, hit the tops and the stems.
    5.) Squirt liberally in new leaf pods – tightly wound new leaf growth (the small mites hide there).
    6.) Get the heck out of the room till it clears.
    7.) Repeat procedure with each plant.
    8.) Spray the soil, the pots, and the floor or earth around the area to kill dropping mites and stop migration.
    9.) Wash hands with soap and water when complete – the stuff will heat-up skin for 4 hours.
    10.) DO NOT WORRY. Though the stuff is lethal to mites, the plants love it.


    Congratulations! You have successfully killed the mites that you sprayed – on contact!. Plus, the mites are thwarted in biting again as they get a lethal dose of hot mouth. Your plants should be turning green again with in half a day. Though the leaves are scarred, they will recover and work again – producing vital sugars for growth.
