Overwhelming Majority Supports Taxing Marijuana In Indiana According To Poll

indiana marijuana poll legalizationBy Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director

A majority of Indiana residents believe that marijuana should be legally regulated like alcohol and nearly 80 percent of Hoosiers support taxing it, according to recently released statewide polling data released by the Bowen Center for Public Affairs at Ball State University.

Fifty-two percent of respondents said that cannabis “should be regulated like alcohol.” Forty-five percent of respondents opposed legalization. Among self-identified Democrats, 64 percent of respondents backed regulation. Forty-nine percent of self-identified Republicans did so.

Hoosiers support for taxing cannabis was even stronger. Seventy-eight percent of respondents, including strong majorities of both major political parties, answered ‘yes’ to the question, “Should we tax marijuana like alcohol/cigarettes?” Only 19 percent of respondents opposed the idea.

Under present state law, first-time marijuana possession offenses of under 30 grams are punishable by up to one-year in jail and a $5,000 fine. Subsequent offenses are classified as felonies, punishable by up to 3 years incarceration.

Six hundred randomly selected Indiana residents participated in the survey, which has a margin of error of +/- 4.8 percent.

The Indiana poll is the latest to show growing support for marijuana law reform among so-called ‘Red State’ voters. Recent statewide surveys in ArizonaLouisiana, and Texas have similarly shown majority support for legalization.

According to an October 2013 nationwide Gallup poll, 58 percent of Americans believe that marijuana should be legal, an all-time high.

I can agree with you 110% we do need it and they will eventually fold and give the people what they want :D in due time they are already talking about decrim being on the ballot for this year so i guess baby steps are a start slow but a start none the less

  2. The dumb arrests of our young possibly future leaders are totally senseless and all the $ that could remain in the coffers by not having to pay mary jane police and prosecute people with these stupid laws are in itself worth legalizing let alone the over greedy tax money that could be collected and additional legal jobs that would transpire! Keep the pressure on as some of those arrests I would bet belong to relatives of some of our legislatures!!

  3. ThatStickyIcky on

Indiana is such an irritating state. I live in Valparaiso, and the cops will fuck with you for anything. Legalizing weed would knock one problem out. I hate Indiana. We really need this legalization.

  8. I didn’t think it was TWB, as it happens on a lot of different websites.

Maybe Anonymous set up the Disqus system, and then let it loose on the internet (smile). I don’t think there’s anyone really running it, but it’s good to know that TWB is not censoring. And it’s also good to know you are trying to get rid of the spammers. Of course, there is spam advertising everywhere, so I guess we should get used to it.

    Cheers mate!

I can assure you guys that it’s not us at TWB. We try as hard as we can to contact Disquis to improve their comment system, but all contact has gone ignored. Same with spam. We want to remove so many spammers, and ‘flag’ them using the Disquis system, but they stay up. Very frustrating!

  10. The mods deleted and made it there own because the first comment showing now about pence was my original comment that’s not cool taking someone’s words and using as your own

  11. Disqus acts indiscriminately at times, losing posted comments and so forth, or moderating comments with words like g a y. If you use a bad word, try spacing it out or replacing a letter with a symbol instead.

  12. I have tons of friends/relatives in indiana that already toke.
They have alot of trouble finding good bud up there compared to other places.
They have so many fields to grow on if it was legalized it would be amazing to get high quality growing help
    out there.
I’m out of Texas tho and travel alot…
Would really like a bill to be passed on all the states mentioned in the post.
I’m on the http://www.420NewsWire.com operating team, its coming along really well! Still some kinks.
I do check in from time-to-time here.
    Happy 420, stay high!

  13. I’m a veteran and draw SSDI due to a bad back among other issues. All the surgeries and medications I have been on have not come close to easing my pain. If I have marijuana in my system the meds I am on will be taken away. The research I have done on medical marijuana tells me CBD marijuana could be the cure. I would love to see a bill passed in Indiana.
