Pressure Builds For Obama To Fire DEA Head Over Medical Marijuana Comments

barack obama marijuanaIt didn’t take DEA head Chuck Rosenberg long to get himself in the hot seat. Chuck Rosenberg recently made comments that referred to medical marijuana as a ‘joke.’ Those comments resulted in Tom Angell and the Marijuana Majority starting a petition calling for the termination of Chuck Rosenberg. That petition currently has 95,912 signers as of this blog post. The petitions will be delivered to the DEA headquarters tomorrow by medical marijuana patients. It would be fantastic to see that petition top 100,000 before that time, so if you haven’t signed it yet, please do so, and tell everyone that you know to do the same. Below is a quote from Tom Angell about the growing pressure for Obama to fire Mr. Rosenberg:

“The call for change at DEA is picking up steam. Calling medical marijuana a ‘joke’ runs counter to science showing that cannabis has medical value, and it is out of step with the vast majority of Americans who polls show overwhelmingly support enacting laws to protect patients from arrest. Nearly 100,000 people have signed our petition saying that Rosenberg should lose his job. Now a bipartisan group of lawmakers has placed this controversy right on President Obama’s desk. If he doesn’t act to make a change soon, this is going to be a continuing political problem for his administration.”

In addition to the petitions being signed by citizens, members of Congress are also calling for Obama to terminate Chuck Rosenberg. Below is a press release that I received from Congressman Earl Blumenauer’s office:

Today, Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), joined by Representatives Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Sam Farr (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Ted Lieu (D-CA), and Jim McDermott (D-WA), sent a letter to President Obama calling for new leadership at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) following recent comments by the Acting Administrator, referring to the notion of smoking medical marijuana as ‘a joke.’

“Mr. Rosenberg’s comments are outrageous and misleading. The last 20 years has shown overwhelming testimonial evidence of the benefits of medical marijuana, leading 23 states, DC, and Guam to change their laws,” said Representative Blumenauer. “President Obama has taken action to respect state medical marijuana laws. Mr. Rosenberg is out of step with the Administration and out of touch. It’s time for new leadership.”

In the letter, the lawmakers also call out Rosenberg’s hypocrisy in statements he made highlighting a lack of information demonstrating the safety or effectiveness of marijuana as medicine. Current federal policies make it very difficult for doctors and scientists to conduct the medical research with marijuana necessary to obtain this information, and the DEA has been integral to limiting access to marijuana that can be legally used for research.

“The real joke is that the DEA has played a huge role in propping up federal policies that have systematically blocked research of marijuana’s medicinal value. If there are any questions about its safety or effectiveness, it’s because the federal government continues to stymie science,” said Representative Blumenauer.

Yesterday, November 18, Representative Blumenauer took to the floor of the House calling for a new DEA chief. Additionally, a petition organized by Marijuana Majority on Change.org demanding that Rosenberg be fired has garnered more than 90,000 signatures.

    God bless…….

  2. Agreed 100%. That’s where I’m at. The government seems to have forgotten all the principles of the Constitution and has adopted the doctrines of “Mein Kampf”. The law has become lawless…..

  3. Then extend Tobacco laws and regulations to that of Cannabis use. It’s a very easy fix to your concerns….

  4. I wish someone would do a story on how second hand marijuana smoke is no more dangerous than that of cigarette smoke. You have more to fear from the Emissions of an Automobile and manufacturing plants than that of Cigarettes or Marijuana smoke. Would you have everyone stop driving? Would you have manufacturing halted? Marijuana should have never been illegal in the first place. You are aware that the main argument in marijuana demonization at the time of its criminalization was that it was making white women have sex with black males? Sad, but true…

  5. Then take the existing regulation of tobacco use and extend it to marijuana use. Problem solved. Just reword the existing laws to include cannabis use….

  6. From your referenced article:

“The amount of second-hand smoke used in this experiment is probably well beyond what most people would endure in a casual setting. But repeated exposures are likely to take a toll,” said Mitch Earleywine, a psychology professor at the State University of New York at Albany and chairman of NORML, a non-profit that works for the legalization of marijuana.

“We consistently encourage all cannabis users to consider vaporizers instead of smoking implements. Anyone hanging around cannabis users should certainly avoid smoke-filled rooms and encourage all their friends to vaporize rather than smoke,” Earleywine added.

  7. ATTENTION** Please support the ‘Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2015’.

Click here http://bit.ly/RemoveMJfromCSA to send a prewritten email to your Senators to urge them to support this pending legislation.

Democratic Presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation to remove marijuana from the US Federal Controlled Substances Act. The Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2015 would deschedule cannabis from the CSA, as is alcohol and tobacco. This legislation provides states the power to establish their own marijuana policies and banking policies free from federal interference.

  8. Dear Andrew – If you had chosen to initially post without attacking my personal character and without insults and mocking me, I may have been inclined to read that list of emails you just sent to my inbox, but as it stands, they went straight to the trash unread. You simply cannot speak to someone that way, completely unprovoked, and expect them to consider you and treat you with respect. Best of luck with life.

  11. My “list of posts”….you mean, the 2 posts? hardly a list. You know nothing but anger, denial, selfishness and ignorance which is clearly evidenced by your initial response of insults and chest-beating. Clearly, your advice to “walk away” shows your ignorance of the negative health effects of second-hand marijuana smoke on people who do not smoke and your selfishness that the majority, the non-smokers, are supposed to put their own health aside so you can indulge in something that cause harm to other people. Good Luck!

  12. Andrew Stanford on

Dear P. You have NO, ZERO, NOTHING, NADA about the negative health effects of “second-hand” marijuana smoke. Beside, if you can smell it, walk away? I have gone through your list of posts, and I can tell volumes by reading them. How would you know how educated I am on ANY subject? Denial? Hardly. Also, Kudos for not drinking alcohol.

  13. Dear Andrew – (1) I am not a Sir. (2) You are severely uneducated on the negative health effects of second-hand smoke and your response is typical of those who smoke pot and are in denial of the negative effects of second-hand marijuana smoke because your only retort is personal attacks and insults because you have no basis for your argument that you have any rights to smoke pot. (3) I don’t drink alcohol

  14. Andrew Stanford on

Your comments insult EVERY sane person, yet you spew them like last night’s overindulgence, get over it, this is the internet and you are voicing your opinion, as am I.

  15. I want to know why this post was allowed because it violates the terms of the website “…
insults and personal attacks are discouraged and hate speech will not be tolerated.”

  16. i wish someone would do a story on the negative health effects of second-hand marijuana smoke on people who don’t smoke.

  17. Andrew Stanford on

You sir are so full of shit we can smell you from here. Secondhand marijuana smoke? Negative health effects? And also, who ever said anything about PUBLIC smoking. Put down your fucking alcohol and drag your head out of your ass.

  18. There are millions of people who do not smoke, who will never smoke, and who should not be subjected to the negative health effects of second-hand marijuana smoke. The rights of a minority who wants to publicly smoke pot does not trump the majority of people who have a right to smoke-free air.

  19. Cannabis, in a pure form, for medicinal purposes is not the same as street marijuana, in no way, shape or form. There are a multitude of negative health effects associated with second-hand marijuana smoke, in addition to a contact high or absorption, most especially for people who are severely allergic to it or who have asthma. This is a serious negative side effect of free-range recreational use of marijuana for the majority of people who do not smoke and who will never smoke. The rights of a minority to smoke pot do not trump the rights of the majority of non-smokers to have smoke-free air.

  20. Cannabis is the most useful plant on the planet ; food, clothing, shelter, energy, medicine, insight, re-creation. It has been mankinds companion since the beginning. Any law against it is a crime against humanity.

  21. To hell with Rosenberg the DEA as a whole needs to be abolished. It has been shown to be inept, unable to follow the law, and is basicly a government sponsored terrorist organization out for nothing but the money.

  22. I wish someone would do a story about the unethical treatment of “some” Vets. If a Vet lives in one of the 23 states, DC, Guam identified above the Vet can

use cannabis as a medicine and be treated in VHA facilities. If they live in VA, FL, etc and use cannabis the VA will have cops remove the Vet from the VA facility. Immoral, medically unethical, and mendacious. Shame on the US. Al Byrne, Lcdr., USN, ret.

  23. David Yoseph Schreiber on

If Rosenberg is not fired promptly than Congressional impeachment and removal proceedings should be initiated as well as a cut off of funding for the DEA.

  24. Obama will take no action – he wouldn’t even fire the previous DEA head Leonhart – she had to go when Congress got sick of her excuses for not firing the agents who had sex parties in Columbia. He won’t fire this new guy either.

  25. This isn’t the first incident. The guys seems to be going out of his way to be offensive. His first smirking quip said he was the only adult in America who wasn’t sure of heroin was more dangerous. Come on. Which is more dangerous a butter knife or a shotgun? He isn’t sure. The only reason he is commenting at all is because it’s a political topic. Congress seems to be slowly chipping away at the DEA budget, pointing out waste. This guy seems to find humor in the very idea of his office. To enforce marijuana Prohibition first with the aim of connecting to dangerous drugs because it is in the black market. I don’t want to hear a news release from the agency explainging what he really meant. He needs to resign or be forced to resign and sent to the Russian front or Siberia.

We know that half all prohibition prosecutions are for marijuana. Quest Labs says half of all urine test that come back positive are for marijuana. The other half are all the dangerous drugs combined. That is an incredible waste and invasion of privacy. This is 2015 and we need a DEA administrator who can show us his plan to cut his budget in half, then down to 10% using specialized task forces like the heroin task force created in last year’s spending bill. We need a public servant who is going to move forward on dangerous substances, and to tell us how that is going to work in a transparent fashion. Let’s face it, of all wasteful government funding the DEA is certainly one that is hard to argue any success at all. It’s been whack a mole for 40 years of chasing so called king pins. Meanwhile we do have a heroin problem that seems to be coming back and still have meth problem. Let’s hear about what they are going to do differently about that. The militant gestapo style forces have failed. They have created terror in communities and not even made a dent in supply and demand. Private prisons, rehab services, urine testing companies, all invested in Prohibition. How about a DEA chief who will call out Big Pharma for trying to get everyone hooked on some sort of pill? We aren’t going back to 1971.

  26. Lawrence Goodwin on

On “All Things Considered” today (Thurs,, 11/19/15), a National Public Radio reporter talked about President Barack Obama’s recent, more defiant “tone” toward his opponents in the U.S. Congress. Mr. Obama reportedly explained that, in the final stretch of his second term, he’s determined to cross off items from something that rhymes with “bucket list.” So the president’s Fuck It List had better include complete removal of the fraudulent term “marihuana” from the Controlled Substances Act. Rip the heart out of that monstrous apparatus deployed against our beautiful cannabis plants, sir.

  27. Hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaahhaha
A ten thousand year running joke of efficacy and modern primitives such as this tool, cannabis’ joke is that before fox news there was a whole lot of fox news es worth of ignorant type people persecuting under gross policy imposing, continuing to impose injustice through justice systems and traditional yoke and trammels. Of course pot isnt worse than alcohol and shouldnt be scheduled higher, thats it. But insulting people’s intelligence, using false contexts dichotomies and arguments to abuse a minority, some of whom find real personal, best option, relief, dont be a dick, why be a dick, is it not apparent that in the future people tell peopled comceitedly pompusly what to do, when that choice is harming no one in any new way, citing alcohol cigs, why does this issue get to linger on, take money from black market put it to schools, deficits, a no brainer

  28. The urgency of removing Marijuana from Schedule 1 has reached the level of a complete and total moral imperative.

Even if it wasn’t a “Wonder Drug” for a wide range of conditions, having Marijuana be illegal would still be morally wrong.

The irony of the situation is that its not only a “Wonder Drug” for one condition, its a collection of “Wonder Drugs” for a wide range of conditions — a life saving medication for Children with seizure disorders — a “Wonder Drug” for Cancer patients undergoing Chemotherapy — and an incredibly promising immunotherapy for a wide range of Cancers, especially some of the most common and deadly forms of brain Cancer and especially Cancer in Children.

This is a moral imperative of the highest order.

If you haven’t signed the petition, please do so now.

  29. Imagine if the government was as hard on Islamic terrorists as they are medical cannabis. We as a nation could still be a superpower instead of the joke we have become the last ten or so years.

  30. A related quote that is relavent: “the snake which cannot cast it’s skin needs to die. As well as the minds that are prevented from changing opinions are nolonger minds”
    – Friedrich Nietzsche

  31. Off the CSA, period, and I am glad Bernie Sanders is going for that right now. I hope he gets elected, and like Justin Trudeau in Canada, ends all the injustice, suffering & death imposed for opposition profits.

  32. The DEA, wearing military style clothing, ski masks and busting down peoples doors with battering rams, shooting homeowners dogs and seizing property of persons involved in growing a relatively harmless plant has seriously deteriorated the American trust in law enforcement and respectable law enforcement officers. These kind of actions has shifted the American mindset from the police being our protectors to the police being our enemies and potential persecutors.

  33. The DEA does not care about people, people’s health or cannabis. it’s become a supremely powerful organism, and it’s only looking out for its own well being. Legalization of cannabis will mean that the DEA will have less work and therefore it’s budget won’t experience growth at their expected or desired extent. If you don’t believe that things can get that datk, just go ahead and research it, and while you’re there, go ahead and research ‘for-profit prisons’… you build a prison and they will guarantee 99% occupancy, what does that mean for times when real crime, or real/valid arrests are low? You figure that out..

  34. Michael Miller on

The prohibition of Cannabis is responsible for millions of lost lives and years of needless suffering. Imagine the knowledge of this plant we would have if it were never made illegal. Everyone would be using it. Everyone would have it in their homes.

I saw a Facebook post of someone wishing for a cure for cancer for Christmas. Knowing her, she probably voted no on issue three for Ohio.

The best medicine in the world is illegal almost everywhere, and many don’t even have a clue as to the miracles it can perform.

  35. Closet Warrior on

Yes the DEA and governments won’t change their ways and they do point blame as they are shamelessly chewing us up and spitting us out monitarily w/taxes and prison and us mmj users and recreational brothers and sisters out there too be shamed by our very own. Hypocrisy

  36. There’s a “fierce moral urgency” to the need to get Medical Marijuana removed from Schedule 1.
Americans, including American Children, are suffering and dying — needlessly.
Marijuana isn’t just “good medicine”, or even “just” a “wonder drug”; as Dr. Sanjay Gupta says — “In many cases, its the only drug that works”

  37. “What of the old serpent who cannot shed his skin, and calls all others naked and shameless? And of him who comes early to the wedding-feast, and when over-fed and tired goes his way saying that all feasts are violation and all feasters lawbreakers?”
