ReformCA Files Marijuana Legalization Initiative For The 2016 Election

reform california marijuana legalizationI just received the following e-mail, which is obviously big news for many reasons:

Johnny –

I wanted you to be the first to know. We’ve filed your initiative!

We believe this effort has the most statewide input and consensus, and thus the greatest likelihood of succeeding on the 2016 ballot. We engaged in extensive discussions with thousands of stakeholders across California just like YOU, including community leaders, activists, elected officials, city and county employees and locals, the CA NAACP, Latino Voters’ Leagues, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, Labor, Medical, Health Care and Environmental Groups. We also held dozens of hours of discussions with the Drafting Advisory Group, which included state and national partners including the Drug Policy Alliance, the Marijuana Policy Project, as well as CA NORML, Americans for Safe Access (ASA), Emerald Growers Association (EGA), Greater Los Angeles Collective Alliance (GLACA), California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA), New Approach, the Harborside Group, and the Council on Responsible Cannabis Regulation.

We’ve filed our proposed initiative language based on the policy priorities and common sense reforms Californians have been asking for for six years now. The policy points were submitted to the Manatt, Phelps and Phillips Law Firm, who created an elegant policy document that falls within the guidelines of the Blue Ribbon Commission’s Report, while complementing the historic actions of the California Legislature. Because of the important reforms we accomplish with respect to criminal justice, I’m thrilled to report Ms. Alice Huffman has joined me as a co-proponent!

The initiative language is available at reformca.com/2016. We welcome your comments and feedback until midnight PST on Wednesday, October 7th.

Click here right now to share the big news on Facebook. The campaign has begun!

We’re excited to keep moving forward with new friends, so please forward this to a friend! California’s prohibition of cannabis has failed. The time has come to set ourselves on a better path that replaces the damaging effects of prohibition with proven and safer regulations that benefit the whole state.

Together, we will legalize cannabis for adults in California in 2016.

Thanks for being with us,

-Dale Sky and the ReformCA team

PS – Our campaign has officially begun, and we need your help to make legalization happen. Chip in now to help make reform a reality.

  1. Anyone with an interest in legalization needs to support this initiative, and financially support the ReformCA organization.
The initiative isn’t perfect. There’s no such thing as a perfect initiative. Success in politics requires the deft art of compromise.
That said, this is the best shot California will have for a long time – and it will happen in an election year when the voter turnout should be decent.
Vote yes and encourage others to do so, and send ReformCA $20 as soon as you can.

  2. It’s Prop 19 all over again : another poorly written initiative, written by the same people. Keeps the AB 266 system. DPA has already threatened to split up. Time to grab the popcorn.

  3. Well I think the emerald growers might be screwed either way, AB 266 limits their cultivation amounts even if this doesn’t pass. And I think that there could be more support for legalization in CA now compared to the last time we tried.

  4. I think that you’re listening to project sam a little too much. Here in California, there are billionaires ready to throw their support behind the most promising legalization initiative, so he’s not the only one with money in this fight. And I don’t think he’s swaying anyone against legalization, support for it is higher now than before it passed in Colorado and Washington. Prohibitionists like Kevin are running out of arguments against legalization.

  5. Balthazar Crumbhunger on

How are you going to convince the growers in the Emerald Triangle that this is a good thing? Last time this was tried, they voted it down with almost the same percentage as “conservative” areas. Their whole system of hide-in-the-mountains agriculture will be destroyed by legalization, as corporate weed will be grown by the acre on legit farms in the Central Valley. I think right now you can buy it in OR and WA for $160 an ounce retail, as there is a glut of the stuff. I seem to remember a black market price of $250/oz wholesale and $400/oz retail, back in the old days. Currently the legal status of weed is the price support in CA and other states. The people of California need to be convinced that using prohibition as a price support is kind of corrupt. The cops and criminals support each other right now.

  6. what about Kevin Sabet? Hes gonna fuck u up this time. Watch what happens when his organization gets millions of dollars to fight every marijuana ballot initiative. At ballotpedia and under opposition, Kevin Sabets name shows up saying “His organization is ready to fight a marijuana legalization initiative in California!”. It wont be like 2014, he is serious. For anyone calling me a troll, look at Kevin Sabets website, learnaboutsam.org. Look how sophisticated it is with all those pages and fancy graphics. Too many people are being swayed and turning against legalization thanks to Kevin Sabet.
