I received the following press release from my favorite politician, Oregon’s very own United States Representative Earl Blumenauer:

On Wednesday, November 18, at approximately 10:00 a.m. (ET) on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR-03) will deliver remarks in response to recent comments by Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg, calling medical marijuana “a joke,” and other actions taken by the Administration rooted in a failed approach of marijuana prohibition and War on Drugs.

As an Oregon state legislator, Congressman Earl Blumenauer supported the Oregon Decriminalization Bill of 1973, which abolished criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996, Congressman Blumenauer has been a leading advocate for changes to federal drug laws. He has championed several legislative efforts to protect medical marijuana patients, reduce federal barriers to medical marijuana research, tax and regulate marijuana, and normalize taxes and banking for marijuana businesses in states where it is legal. He was deeply involved with the successful campaign to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana in Oregon in 2014 and has worked closely with stakeholders in the state as the law has been implemented.

  1. How hard is it to open a book and read the history of of marijuana.
No one can be that ignorant. He like many in this government are just dishonest for financial gain.

  2. Well, the guy says that he’s not an expert on drugs. That alone should be enough to fire his sorry -ss. Of course, not knowing anything about drugs doesn’t stop him from shooting off his fat mouth about medical MJ being “a joke”. Yes, the agency should be liquidated, yesterday.

  3. Everybody should call the white house comment line at (202) 456-1111 and ask that President Obama get Marijuana removed from Schedule 1 immediately.

  4. The study was done by the government from 1970-72 called the National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse. Nixon ignored it, and the government continues to ignore it. I’ve heard people say that they made colleges destroy any positive research around 70-74, but it’s kind of hard to prove. This one they just pretend doesn’t exist.

    From wikipedia-
After the Commission’s widespread study and analysis, it concluded that “Looking only at the effects on the individual, there, is little proven danger of physical or psychological harm from the experimental or intermittent use of the natural preparations of cannabis.”

Specifically, the Commission recommended “a social control policy seeking to discourage marijuana use, while concentrating primarily on the prevention of heavy and very heavy use.” The report noted that society can provide incentives for certain behavior without prosecuting the unwilling, citing the example that “the family unit and the institution of marriage are preferred means of group-living and child-rearing in our society. As a society, we are not neutral. We officially encourage matrimony by giving married couples favorable tax treatment; but we do not compel people to get married.”

The Commission recommended decriminalization of simple possession, finding:

[T]he criminal law is too harsh a tool to apply to personal possession even in the effort to discourage use. It implies an overwhelming indictment of the behavior which we believe is not appropriate. The actual and potential harm of use of the drug is not great enough to justify intrusion by the criminal law into private behavior, a step which our society takes only ‘with the greatest reluctance.
The Commission found that the constitutionality of marijuana prohibition was suspect, and that the executive and legislative branches had a responsibility to obey the Constitution, even in the absence of a court ruling to do so:

While the judiciary is the governmental institution most directly concerned with the protection of individual liberties, all policy-makers have a responsibility to consider our constitutional heritage when framing public policy. Regardless of whether or not the courts would overturn a prohibition of possession of marijuana for personal use in the home, we are necessarily influenced by the high place traditionally occupied by the value of privacy in our constitutional scheme.
The Commission also found that “the use of drugs for pleasure or other non-medical purposes is not inherently irresponsible; alcohol is widely used as an acceptable part of social activities”.[1]

The Commission recommended the implementation of a discouragement policy against marijuana use, “while concentrating primarily on the prevention of heavy and very heavy use.”

  5. From my research, it was only meant to be a temporary classification waiting for further studies that never happened or were destroyed by Nixon. We are now going on a half a century of this fraud.

  6. You cant give an inch, we have put up this ghost of nixon long enough. End the war on sick ppl now.

  8. David Yoseph Schreiber on

A person with such nonfeasance, malfeasance, and lack of integrity certainly should not be confirmed for a high governmental position. The Senate has every right to question Rosenberg carefully about his opinions on cannabis, including slippery statements, as well as actions he has taken both as acting director and before. Just what does he know about medical marijuana, when did he know it, and when should he have known it.

What we really need as head of the DEA is a person who will substantially liquidate the agency. The only thing that should remain of it is a mechanism to provide counselling and assistance to people who are suffering from substance abuse. Examples would include running supervised injection facilities for heroin addicts, as well as supporting organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous, Weight Watchers, and Smoke Watchers. If it is successful an educational and regulatory system could be set up for psychedelics like psylocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca / DMT, peyote / mescalin, and LSD.

  9. Anyone know which C-span channel it will be on? – I have to record it, so now I’ve set recordings on all three C-span channels at once. I don’t know if that will work.

  10. Medical Marijuana has an unmatched safety profile — much better than that of over the counter pain relievers.
    Google Medical Marijuana Therapeutic Index
    Google Tylenol Poisoning
Medical Marijuana has a therapeutic index over over 20,000.
Tylenol’s Therapeutic index is about 5.

  11. There’s a new urgency to the need for national legalization of Medical Marijuana. Not only is it a “Wonder Drug” for Cancer patients undergoing Chemotherapy, but High Dose Medical Marijuana Oil Therapy (HDMMOT) is showing remarkable effectiveness against Cancer — even at stage 4 and even when other therapies have failed — as well as showing a high degree of synergy with Chemotherapy and Radiation in both animal studies and for a large number of patients around the world — especially against brain tumors and especially against Cancer in Children. It is a moral imperative that we begin large scale double blind clinical trials in both Children and Adults to see if these results can be duplicated on a large scale and to make sure to use sufficiently high doses, built up over time and properly titrated, to avoid under-dosing. Medical Marijuana has an incredibly wide therapeutic index — unique among drugs used in Cancer therapy — which usually have a very narrow one and usually must be administered at extremely toxic, nearly fatal levels. Marijuana is a “Wonder Drug” for Cancer Patients. I have no doubt it is a major breakthrough that will save countless lives.
