Researchers have discovered that smoking cannabis can reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including tremors and pain. 20 patients, at an average of 66 years old, took part in a study, and scored an average of 33 on the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale prior to consuming cannabis. The score dropped to 24 just 30 minutes after smoking. Ruth Djaldetti, MD, of Tel Aviv University Israel, who recently presented the discovery at the International Congress on Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, explained; “We not only saw improvement in tremor in these patients, but also in rigidity and in bradykinesia [slowness of movement cause by the disease]”.

The patients participating in the study started with an average tremor score of 7.5 on the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale, which was reduced to 3.5 after smoking cannabis. The average rigitity score started at 7.4, and dropped to 6.4, and the bradykinesia score began at 13.2 and was reduced to an average of 8.6.

The study also found smoking cannabis to be effective for pain relief, resulting in better sleep. All of the patients in the study were already taking medications for pain, but were not getting the relief needed. “We saw a dramatic reduction in pain in our patients and in their ability to sleep”, said Dr. Djaldetti. “When their pain was reduced, they slept better.”

  1. I have several chronic conditions including but not limited to Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Degenerative Disc Disease and Depression. I take so many pills, I rattle when I walk. But I find when I can afford to indulge in some cannabis, it takes a lot of my worse symptoms away. Less pain, less depression and better sleep. I’ve smoke weed for over 35 years and I’ve never committed a crime because of it. I believe there are so many healing qualities to this little plant that we haven’t even discovered. i believe that it should be legal for medical and recreational use. We don’t have any long term studies to find out what preventative qualities it may have. We the people are the only ones who can demand change. Contact your local, state and federal represenatives and congressmen. Demand a change. Stop the ignorance. We can do it. We have the numbers. Namaste, my friends. Keep up the fight.

  2. there is an article in todays phila inquirer about a 2 year old girl who suffers from a rare form of epilepsy called dravet syndrome. she has been hospitalized 20 times and sometimes has had convulsions last up to an hour. once again as pharmaceuticals fail once again the parents look for alternative medicine even got her a new jersey cannabis card gov christie isn’t so sure about cannabis for kids. where is the compassion? pharmaceuticals seem to have more adverse effects than good.if the course of treating the patient has no positives or even hope don’t the people know that its time to come up with a better plan or at least another option? once again politicians make me sick
