San Diego Mayor Urges Jurors To Ignore Federal Marijuana Law

Federal Medical Marijuana ronnie chang bob filner san diego jury nullificationThe Mayor of San Diego is encouraging jurors of an upcoming medical marijuana case to reject the prosecution’s argument, which rests on the fact that marijuana is banned at the federal level.

The feds arrested Ronnie Chang of San Marcos in 2009 for operating a medical marijuana dispensary. He is just one of the many Californians who have faced legal consequences for their state-sanctioned efforts to bring relief to patients.

Mayor Bob Filner is outraged at Chang’s situation. “Someone should not be going through this stage of prosecution for trying to help people to have access to medical marijuana,” he told reporters.

A champion for civil rights and a former Freedom Rider, Mayor Filner wants jurors to send a message to the federal government this fall, when Chang’s trial is expected to begin.

“[I]t’s time, like with Prohibition, to step back and say this was a stupid thing to do…and juries ought to take the lead in saying that to the federal government.”

In a process known as “jury nullification,” Mayor Filner hopes that those selected to listen to Chang’s case will place their consciences above the evidence and acquit him of any wrong doing.

Let’s hope the jury heeds Mayor Filner’s bold cry for action.

I take my hat off to the mayor! This is truely the start to give the message to the feds to end the war on drugs. Finally a politition with a sack. Love you brother!

  2. and a hyper conservative by nature would oppose prohibition at any level. true political conservatism is about personal freedoms

  3. WOW… a Politician with some BALLS! WTG Mayor Filner… It’s TIME for us to send the message to the Federal Govt. that they’re NOT going to continue throwing us in jail for using a PLANT that I can grow in my backyard, and has ALLOWED me to be able to cut my Morphine intake by 50%! My wife says she’s “…got her husband back…” I was FORCED into an OPIOID HAZE following a MAJOR Workplace accident in 1994! There literally are YEARS (9) that I really have ZERO recollection of. In 2010 AZ passed Medical Cannabis and I thought I’d give it a try. It SAVED MY LIFE! The Morphine almost KILLED me twice and I was required to have a “Pacemaker/Defibrillator” installed, because the Morphine basically deadened the “Electrical Portion” of my heart beat, and one day it just QUIT working! After having to bring me back, I said ENOUGH, and I decided to give Medical Cannabis a try. It’s turned out to be THE BEST decision of my life! My Dr. KNOWS what caused the change and is BESIDE himself with joy, and he has asked me to send him as much information as I can regarding Medical Cannabis and it’s efficacy as a medicine. The older people in my family have WAY NOTICED the change in me and are ECSTATIC to see it. However, NONE of them know that it was Cannabis that SAVED MY LIFE!

  5. fantastic! amen from someone in a position of power to be responsible and speak out against the federal government. we the people run the show, they have forgotten. we have not. it is time for real change. enough is enough. this plant cures cancer and your government wants to keep it illegal. that should make you vomit in your mouth and take action! no more insanity!

  6. The feds are going to be pissed about this. If the idea goes mainstream, it could cause a lot of problems for the fed gang.

  7. Wow! I always though Mayor Filner was just another one of those San Diego hyper-conservatives. Guess he’s not! Bravo, Mayor! We need more officials to stand up to the most ridiculous Federal law ever written.
