Scandal: Taxpayer Money Funding Political Anti-Marijuana Campaign

The two leading opponents of sensible drug policies are using taxpayer money to run their campaign against marijuana legalization in Oregon

How can this be legal?

Kevin Sabet and Josh Marquis are two of the biggest anti-marijuana zealots on the planet. They are also leading opponents of Measure 91, the Oregon ballot measure would regulate, legalize and tax marijuana.

They are using our taxpayer money to campaign against Measure 91, going on a 13-city “education” tour across Oregon, right before ballots drop. Why? To talk about the horrors of marijuana. Making matters worse, the money comes from a federal grant, paid for by the American people.

Here’s the story, now trending on the Portland subreddit. Willamette Week broke it, but buried the lead, even hiding some of the news in a photo caption.

The ‘education tour’ is funded through a federal Drug-Free Communities Support Program grant, administered through the same office for which Sabet worked. It’s not clear yet how much taxpayer money will be spent on the tour. Planners say each county will foot the bill separately. The Jefferson County portion of the tour, for example, will run about $15,000 for a two-day conference, half of which will be dedicated specifically to marijuana.

This is not an education tour. If it had been an education tour, they would have invited neutral drug educators or people like Oregon’s leading drug addiction expert, who could tell the other side of the story.

This is an anti-marijuana campaign, plain and simple.

This needs to be investigated more. My challenge to readers and other bloggers – please help us get some basic questions answered.

  • Is this legal? Because if it is, it shouldn’t be. What election laws might they be violating?
  • $15,000 is being spent on the Jefferson County part of the tour. How much federal money is being spent in total?
  • How much of this money is going to Kevin Sabet for speaking? How much is going to Josh Marquis?
  • How many times have Kevin Sabet and Josh Marquis used taxpayer money to campaign against marijuana?
  • How many unsolved murder and rape cases are there in Clatsop County, where Josh Marquis is supposed to be leading prosecutions? Does he have more important things to do?
  • Who is administering this grant? What does that person have to say.

Please share this story and help us get out the word.

  1. What part of Fu~k you are you having a problem with you Tea Party Nitwit. Your post just shows your ass but you are too stupid to understand that.Fuc~k you and all of your Tea Party Nitwit buddies. And tell them all that I said that puss bucket.

  2. Well OK. You convinced me. I’m on your side now. I think you should be taxed at 99.9% of your income and cannabis taxes should be at minimum $10,000 a lb. Since you feel you are not Taxed Enough Already.

Are you having fun yet? I am. LOL.

  3. That’s great you are performing a great service and I would like to thank you for your good work.

  4. I don’t want protestors making an ASS out odd themselves but SOMEBODY (leading proponents of legalization) needs to stand up and challenge EVERYTHING Sabet says! He LIES and extrapolates things from one study and conflates it with something ANOTHER study says and calls it gospel. When NEITHER study has been peer reviewed, or been peer reviewed and REFUTED. Yet Sabet will keep repeating those LIES to the public. Somebody needs to engage him!

I’m a peaceful guy, but even I would LOVE to smash his Fuckin face in! Knock that lil lisp out of his mouth!

  5. Well, I’m with the Tea Party and I favor an end to prohibition. You should be careful when smearing. You might smear an ally.

  6. Mr. Saber is a profiteer . Plain and simple. Our president made a big error employing him in his cabinet. Why do you thinek he’s not there now. Also he can make a lot money taking his dog and pony show downtown

  7. These cynical, self-serving assholes should be tarred and feathered and run out of the state. They couldn’t care less about the use or effects of cannabis, good or bad. It’s just a straw man that permits them to build their personal retirement funds, sometimes at taxpayer expense. The worst of the worst.

  8. Johnny Bloomington on

Misleading title there. I guess it’s all about the page hits.

Anyways, I’m glad to see ol Kevin Sabet not being taken seriously.

  9. Honestly, not only does your state, but every other state uses your tax dollars to try to smear and make it illegal again even though it has helped so many people with medical marijuana. Without Cannabis I would be in severe pain and sleeping nearly impossible. I used to go 2-3 days at a time without getting good rest. Plus the CBD’s have potent anti-inflammatory capability, combined with THC which has potent pain killing properties akin to natural endorphins. It eliminates the need for Naproxen which kills your kidneys and liver, or you have the Hydrocodones, so many people are addicted to it, and more people die yearly than have ever died on cannabis, which the death toll is still zero.

  10. Any Prosecuters in Oregon tat want to make a write your own ticket by prosecuting these two people. Please step up..

Kevin looks like he would con you out of house and home.
We all know he can look you in the eyes and lie .

I suggest first and foremost, they have some lawyers examine whether any laws were broken, or any ethics violations by the sheriff for engaging in political campaigning on the taxpayers’ dime. For example, is Josh Marquis taking official time, that should be spent on prosecutions, to go around campaigning against measure 91 instead? Then, if any ethics violations or violations of the law are uncovered, file complaints and lawsuits. Meanwhile, on the political front, I’d suggest counter-rallies at these “education” events, with demonstrators holding signs stating factual information about marijuana prohibition and the benefits of legalization, along with other signs questioning how much are county taxpayers footing the bill for this propaganda tour. Stage our own press conferences at these events, as well. Follow them wherever they go, and send a message that we will not quit, and we will not be cowed by lies and corruption.

Here in Lane county, last November, a funding levy was on the ballot for the Lane County Sheriff’s office. The measure passed, because the sheriff campaigned that the LCSO was so short on funds, that they had to release violent criminals into the community. He even staged a press-conference/photo op in front of the county jail on a day that they released dozens of inmates back into the community, in a campaign-style event to promote the measure. Needless to say, the measure passed. It is now reasonable for taxpayers to ask why their money is being used to fund political campaigns by law enforcement, when they supposedly don’t have enough resources to keep violent offenders, including a sex offender, in jail. Time to expose Josh Marquis’ and Kevin Sabet’s campaign for the fraud that it is.

Oregon taxpayers, if you value accountability in your tax dollars, support measure 91. If you value saving millions in law enforcement and prison costs, support measure 91. If you value a hundred million dollars per year in new revenue, without raising property taxes or income taxes, and while keeping Oregon a sales-tax free state, support measure 91. On the other hand, if you’re OK with county law enforcement wasting your tax dollars on political campaigns, vote “no.”

  12. I hope that plenty of people stand up at their ” 13-city “education” tour ” and Boo and Hiss at their utter stupidity.

  13. Tea Party Nitwits. They can’t stop anything especially the flow of bullshit that is constantly coming out of their mouths.

  14. Josh Marquis is the kind of Democrat that we’re trying to elect less of. He’s quite conservative on this issue, and on the death penalty, and on law and order generally (mandatory minimums, for example).

Kevin Sabet is another rather conservative guy who tries to play the “third way” so he can seem like a reasonable, center-left “liberal” while he, like many other rapidly disappearing blue dogs, is really pushing a right wing, authoritarian agenda.

But most of all, he’s a bullshitter:

Good thing for him that facts don’t really matter much these days, or he’d be out of work.
