new study published last month in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs has found that cannabis use can greatly decrease the negative impacts of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For the study, researchers used the Clinician Administered Posttraumatic Scale to determine symptom scores of 80 individuals with PTSD before and after they began using cannabis. According to the data garnered from the study, cannabis was found to reduce a person’s symptom score by an average of 75%.

“Cannabis is associated with reductions in PTSD symptoms in some patients, and prospective, placebo-controlled study is needed to determine efficacy of cannabis and its constituents in treating PTSD”, says Dr. George Greer, one of the study’s researchers.

A study released last November by the journal Neurology of Learning and Memory came to a similar conclusion, finding that PTSD may be treated by THC, the primary compound found in cannabis.

I am a Viet Nam veteran, who returned home believing no ill effects had been suffered from the experience.. until the first Fourth of July back home, when I found myself going hyper-vigilant, eyes scanning the tree-line, which was being continually lit up by the massive number of ‘flares’ shot into the sky. I could not enjoy the aerial display of fireworks because, in a war-time combat zone, you do NOT spoil your night-vision by watching flares, whenever they get popped up after dark. I found I could watch such displays on television, but not outside until one year I discovered how cannabis relieved my anxiety, restoring and heightening my appreciation of this entertainment.

Any Dr. whether in the VA or in the civilian world that would willfully deny pain medication because someone has THC in their system should have their license to practice medicine revoked.

  3. I am a Vietnam vet. PTSD, Rheumatoid arthritis and Gout conditions. Not only does the VA not allow marijuana use, If you take something like vicodin,….They will not prescribe pain killers to you if you smoke to medicate to help with symptoms of PTSD. Sick and tired of the Government holding us hostage. Been a hostage since I first enlisted. So I can either treat my PTSD or I can take 2 Vics a day when I need them for pain. Lets outlaw bread too, ridiculous!

  4. Thank you, ignorant Colorado House of Representatives for deciding not to add PTSD to the list of conditions which permit physicians to prescribe medical cannabis. Veterans with serious and debilitating issues still have to pay the ridiculous sin tax on recreational reefer to self-medicate, yet snowboarder dudes with “sore backs” are lined up in front of the low-tax medical marijuana counter, red cards in hand. What a sad joke. That bill should be re-introduced next year.

  5. I dunno…not according to the esteemed scientists in the US House of Representatives… /sarcasm off. Heartless dumb fucks! Voting against allowing the VA doctors to prescribe medical cannabis to vets with PTSD. Also It’s ironic how much both parties suck up to the pro-Israeli lobbyists, but at the same time act like there’s not a single Israeli scientific study favoring cannabis for PTSD. Is it because our vets with PTSD aren’t suffering as much as these Israeli vets in the eyes of our scientist doctor representatives? Are our vets not good enough to live a life with decent medical care? Seriously, in the US for the pass decade we have seen enough “Support our troops” bumper stickers to fill a landfill, but we don’t give a fuck about the troops, certainly not when they come home. If you think as a hole our society does, then I’d say your patriotism is mindless. Hold these representatives who voted No accountable and vote them out! This isn’t a partisan issue!
