The Role Of Faith Leaders In Legalizing Marijuana

catholic church marijuanaOn Thursday, March 12, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, EST, Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, Senior Pastor of Dallas’ Friendship-West Baptist Church and co-founder and leader of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, will join the Drug Policy Alliance’s asha bandele for a discussion about the role faith communities have to play in ending the drug war. bandele is expected to discuss marijuana legalization with Rev. Haynes, stigma and how faith communities plan to help re-acclimate tens of thousands of people who are being decarcerated annually.

The quarterly town hall-style calls are designed to ensure that the nation’s leading organization working to end the war on drugs, is bringing before the widest audiences the most influential members in our nation and allowing for an open discussion with those who are on the ground and reforming drug war policies.  In short, the calls are meant to host the discussions that the global community is having, and that policymakers in the US need to be having.

The teleconference with Rev. Haynes is our first this year, and follows DPA’s successful first year of town hall discussions, which included thought leaders like Michelle Alexander, Eugene Jarecki and Stanton Peele.  The conversations, picked up by national media including CNN and The Huffington Post have now been listened to and shared close to half a million times.  We expect that this call will be the most provocative yet, given the leadership role Rev. Haynes plays in African American faith communities and his demonstrated commitment to human and civil rights and liberties.

Now I have seen everything!!! A Baptist minister supporting legalizing cannabis and ending the drug war!!! Maybe they see how very much good it can do, or perhaps it is simply the fact that the war on drugs hurts a full one-third of our population. I know of a person involved in making street meth who, in the course of stealing Anhydrous Ammonia, froze his penis and both legs were amputated!!! The stuff is all over the Midwest, but taking such risks is truly cruel even though I can’t stand the stuff. This war is creating injuries of all types and imprisoning far too many!!!

Yes, you are very correct; this is about the Constitutionally guaranteed right of individual freedoms. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness regarding how one treats their health and wellness. It also does not hurt the least little bit that taxpaying corporations have sprung up, adding legal legitimacy to everyone’s view of cannabis!!! Yes, we did promise the government that, if legalized, they could tax it!!! This is why we need to be able to produce our own if taxation becomes too high, or predatory!!!

  3. Christians believe in compassion. The war on drugs is cruel and unjust. Supporting education and rehabilitation, over arrest and incarceration, is the Christian position. I pray for the day when America will truly be free.

  4. Moses burning bush was Cannabis because he had hallucinations after breathing the smoke. I would think that to be a true christian you would have to support using cannabis.

IF, god made the heavens and earth, then weed would be a part of his grand design. ;-) Just saying, if you believe this way. :-)

  6. Absolutely, freedom is the real issue here. We have to talk about states rights and health/safety in order to gain support. But none of that really matters. This is America and we are supposed to believe in individual liberty.

So now Church leaders — Republicans — Atheists — Democrats, are coming together. This is what USA represents. This topic is more about freedom, than it is about the drug.
