Thirty One States Are Considering Marijuana Law Reform

Legalize Marijuana legalization cannabis prohibition tea partyBy Erik Altieri, NORML Communications Director

At post time, there are 31 states that currently have pending marijuana law reform legislation. These measures deal with a wide array of topics including decriminalization, record expungement, medical access, and full legalization. 2015 is shaping up to be one of the most active legislative sessions on record for the marijuana legalization movement, but these bills won’t pass themselves. It is absolutely crucial that you, the stakeholders and voters, get engaged in the process and apply pressure to your state lawmakers to urge them to support these measures.

Reaching out to your state officials is as simple as a few clicks of the mouse using NORML’s Take Action Center. Simply consult the landing page to see if your state has pending legislation, click on that legislation, enter your zip code, and a pre-written email will be sent on your behalf. Once you have taken this initial step, we strongly encourage you to follow up by contacting your lawmakers directly and speaking to them on the phone. If politicians don’t hear from their constituents on these pieces of legislation, they remain unlikely to support them when they are called for a vote. Don’t forget to check out the full listing here and check back frequently as new alerts are added and old ones are updated with the most recent information.

Together, we can make the country a little more NORML. Together, we WILL legalize marijuana nationwide.

  1. Oh spare me. When I travel to other countries I have to play by the rules of the host countries. It’s not too much to ask that those who come here do the same. But that’s neither here nor there. This is about liberty. Nobody should ever be caged like an animal or subject to government harassment for weed. You don’t have to consume weed to be a friend of liberty. Many don’t and support legalization because it is right and just. They don’t sit around making imbecilic generalizations based on idiot prejudices as illustrated in your post.

    >>>>>You are suffering under the delusion that a person cannot have more than one passionate cause<<<<<

BINGO. Other causes: integrative medicine vs big pharma, rallying for the labeling of foods, against GMOs, human rights, animal rights, spirituality…..
The new documentary, BOUGHT, by Jeff Hays sums my causes up, beautifully!!

  3. “Wise men speak because they have something to say;Fools because they have to say something” I think this certainly applies in you’re case m knight!

  4. Looks like Michigan is going to stick us again
I can’t believe that people think our medical program is good.

You are suffering under the delusion that a person cannot have more than one passionate cause. As a medical professional (a Bachelor of Sciences in administration with prior medical and research experience) you can be assured that had anyone asked me; our border with Mexico and Canada would be as open as the one between Iowa and Minnesota!!! I know Johnny has passions for other issues too, but he focused his strength in one he knew well as it is the title of this blog. We are not blind to the other vitally important issues in our world, and to be accused of this is particularly offensive to me. Postville, IA was home to a Kosher meat packing plant, and the largest Immigration raid ever. From Russians and Jewish to many Latino families were torn apart, and those that I spoke to at Church, in Walmart, and during local celebrations were accepted as part of the community. I fought with the rest of Decorah, Postville, and West Union to reunite these families (there were smaller towns involved too, but they would not interest you). The families were given a voice at our Churches, on the steps of the court house, and were provided rides to the state capitol to speak their piece. Those who were reunited because of the community efforts are cared for. Those who were not have their pictures on the Church greeting areas showing the entire family. You can call me any kind of stoner you want, that does not offend me!!! Saying I only have this interest is very offensive. I hope Johnny lets this post stand because this is a great misconception of cannabis users; that cannabis and getting buzzed is all we care about. I also hope everyone who sees this speaks out for the other causes they have, to dispel this image in your mind. So, what’s up stoners? What are your other causes????????

Iowa keeps running their stories about cannabis grow-ops, and potential dispensaries. Then one discovers our governor will not allow anything except Charlottes Web to be grown and researched. Since the U.S. Attorney General took away Branstad’s “cash cow” of property seizure, he is looking for a method of making more medical forms available. Returning to his former statement, he was elected by Iowa’s POWERFUL fundamentalist parties, and had a son, Eric, who was quite drunk and stoned when he tried to pass a semi and killed a family. He was re-arrested a few weeks later with cannabis he got from someone in Des Moines (he was a friend of one of my collective, and when we discovered who he was we cut off all business with him). Branstad got him off with a civil traffic ticket and even though he was a young ALCOHOLIC, the governor has always blamed cannabis. You will find many Midwest areas where a governor’s policies are determined by a son and brother’s legal trouble with cannabis, but the offending family member never sees a night in jail over their possession, these are some of the most creative civil fines administered.
Before Iowa can come close to legality of any sort, these fundamentalist groups must be tamed to a level of accepting reason. They have to have had some education to allow even Charlotte’s Web to become legal to possess. I think all the states get it with the seizure thing, they have no other education except for cancer (“we let them have Marinol pills”), but this goes far beyond cancer too!!! We are seeing that even in Iowa, education and their compassion will work, but we must now stop the images of babies and start talking about the poisons it will replace and the adults it will help!!!

  7. Worry about the real issues like immigrants getting torn from their families. Yay you’ll soon be able to blow your money on weed whoopdy freakin doo. Idiots.

  8. The Louisiana legislature may vote on medical dispensaries this year. Louisiana has a medical marijuana law on the books that hasn’t been implemented due to the lack of dispensaries. Naturally, the people and special interests that want to make Louisiana the world’s number #1 jailer oppose it.
