U.S. Surgeon General Admits Marijuana Has Medical Value

medical marijuana doctorMarijuana is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance by the United States government. In order for marijuana to be classified as a Schedule I substance, that means that the federal government considers marijuana to have zero medical value. This of course is a slap in the face to science and logic, proven by the fact that the same federal government grows marijuana for medical reasons in Mississippi, supplies medical marijuana to four federal medical marijuana patients, and owns patents related to marijuana’s medical value. The hypocrisy increased even further this week when the United States Attorney General admitted in an interview that marijuana has medical value. Per the Huffington Post:

Dr. Vivek Murthy, the nation’s new surgeon general, says that marijuana “can be helpful” for some medical conditions, and wants science to dictate policy on the federally banned substance.

“We have some preliminary data that for certain medical conditions and symptoms, that marijuana can be helpful,” Murthy said during a Wednesday interview on “CBS This Morning” in response to a question about his stance on marijuana legalization.

While Murthy didn’t take the opportunity to endorse legalization of marijuana for medical or recreational purposes, he did add that he believes U.S. marijuana policy should be driven by science and what it reveals about the efficacy of using the plant for medical purposes.

It is way beyond time for marijuana to be removed from the list of Schedule I controlled substances. There is no scientific or logical basis for such a classification. Marijuana is medicine. Marijuana needs to be researched to see how it can help patients, and while there is private research being conducted, rescheduling marijuana would open the flood gates to research, which is something that would benefit the medical community greatly.

  3. Speaking on CBS News, U.S. Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy, said: “So I think that we have to use that data to drive policymaking, and I’m very interested to see where that data takes us,” he said….My position is that we have to see what the science tells us about the efficacy of marijuana, before hinting that marijuana laws may need to be reformed.”

Really? In 1942 the Laquarida commission looked at the available data
and concluded there was no legitimate reason to prohibit cannabis. In
1972 the Shafer commission reviewed the “temporary scheduling” of
cannabis as a schedule I drug and recommended that prohibition be

In 1989 DEA administrative law judge Francis Young reviewed the data and said “In strict medical terms marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly
consume. For example, eating 10 raw potatoes can result in a toxic
response. By comparison, it is physically impossible to eat enough
marijuana to induce death. Marijuana in its natural form is one of the
safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of
rational analysis marijuana can be safely used within the supervised
    routine of medical care.”

Since 1996 cannabis has been recommended by licensed MDs for therapeutic
use by hundreds of thousands, into millions of of individuals, who have
benefited from the therapeutic properties of cannabis; and in some
cases resulting in the virtually miraculous healing of patients with
terminal illnesses. Something that none of the FDA approved drugs have
    been able to match.

There is no shortage of real world data out there already. All
prohibition policy, since 1937, has been driven by anything other than
scientific and empirical data. If it wasn’t so tragic in the needless
suffering and lost lives the statement of the Surgeon General would be a
joke — a very bad joke. This is just more kicking the can down the

  4. the puppet masters will decide when to tell OUR elected officials to legalize MM. i guess when they think it’s time to throw us another bone. the SG could just ask OUR allies in Israel.

  5. Maybe this news will help move off schedule one status and perhaps the case in Sacramento, may have an effect on the judges decision!

  6. Not just a trend – but it’s becoming “Trendy” for politicians to do the Cannabis “double speak”. It’s a relatively new dance move perfected by Obama, and all the rage now don’t ya know. The never ending dance to get votes from both camps. “can be helpful” – followed by – “no accepted medical benefit”.

Disgusting politicians. Get behind it or don’t. Stop wasting our time hanging on your every word with our hearts filled with hope, while our heads know nothing is going to change.

  7. Yes, it might have some medical value but we need more tests . . Yes, you must wait, we need o do more tests. . .

  8. It took 4 states and DC to legalize for recreational use, and 20+ states to legalize for medicinal use before a ranking fed was willing to admit marijuana has medicinal use and should be rescheduled. How slowly things move in the capital.

  9. Please don’t confuse us with your science. We are much more interested in making sure we are re-elected, and don’t dare risk losing all that money and power over marijuana (which almost all of us have used at one time or another).

    Sincerely yours, Washington Politicians.

  10. We should point out that there was 10 original patients. 4 of those patients are still alive. This program was started May 10 1978 this program had aids patients, multiple sclerosis, glacoma, nail patella syndrome , multiple congenital cartilaginous exotosis. look these illnesses up and understand . That these people these medical Marijuana patients have been testing, smoking Marijuana for our government for 35 + years.you can bet that the United State Government program that allows this testing keeps all kinds of record’s on these patients and how Marijuana helps them get through the day.
Our U.S surgeon general should be able to ask for a reclassification. Hopefully he will do more than just say a few words. I would like to point out that our congress by voting or our president can make an executive act and change Marijuana laws.

  11. they have already proven that marijuana can help a lot of people it should not be a schedule 1 drug the evidence is there so why don’t they remove it especially because the government grows their own and gives it to federal employees that have different ailments it’s like it’s ok for us but not for the public I think it’s because of the pharmaceutical companies don’t want it to be legal because they would lose a lot of money it would let people get off of painkillers which has caused people to die and there has been no case that anyone has ever died consuming marijuana

  12. Jordan Shorette on

Little by little the prohibition walls are coming down, the community should start a program called “safer” approaches to marijuana that emphasizes highly on a tax and regulate system. I cant wait till it slaps kevin sabet in the face that his entire lifes work has been redundant and a waste. Which is exactly what its been

  13. Previous Surgeon Generals have said the same, but this is becoming a trend, at very least.
