Update From Florida’s 2016 Medical Marijuana Campaign

united for care florida medical marijuanaI received the following message from the Florida medical marijuana campaign that I figured I’d pass along:

Every day, the Florida Supervisor of Elections updates the count of VALIDATED petitions for the medical marijuana amendment.

Each county has 30 days to validate what we’ve submitted and then submit that number to the state.

To date, over 43,259 have been validated – which means we have only 639,890 to get on the ballot (and roughly 28,154 to trigger Supreme Court Review).  Earlier in the month, we submitted over 100,000 petitions to be validated.

We can get on the ballot and be Amendment 1 for 2016 – but we need to get our petitions in and fund the rest of the petition drive.

Download/Sign/Print the petition here.

Contribute to the petition drive here.

Thanks for your support.

  1. Adelson did pour money in opposition and most likely accounted for the 2% we lacked. It also didn’t help having a drunk Morgan on video either.

In most presidential elections, voter turnout is higher hence why many social issue initiatives get put on those ballots. Each side hopes their members will turn out the vote. The belief that 2016 will turn out more voters is reference by this past election season that saw many Democrats sit home while Republicans turned out and took over the Senate.

Having said that, I think you are right that next year will not turn out more voters of one party over the other. There are many on both sides that think this country has hit a brick wall and those voters will want a say in which path we take forward.

There were plenty of fear mongering ads run in opposition last year in Florida that one can reasonably believe if not for those ads and Sheldon’s money, Florida would be a MMJ state today. Adelson will be back next year as well as in Ohio as well along with the negative ads.

One interesting note that about Florida’s amendment process that many don’t know. The initiative that was put forth to change the percentage required to amend the state constitution did not even garner 60% at the polls since Florida only needed a simple majority for it to pass.

  2. Even if a perfect campaign is run without a penny of opposition, its still likely to lose. Florida requires 60% for voters to pass a law, not a simple majority like other states. California only got 55% in 1996 when they voted for medical marijuana. Same with Oregon in 1998 with 54%, Washington 1998 59%, Alaska 1998 58%, Colorado 2000 52%, Arizona 2010 51%. Guam 2014 56%…….

All those campaigns failed to get 60% with no opposition money, no Kevin Sabet and medical marijuana was seen as only for the sick and dying. Medical marijuana wasnt under scrutiny for being a ruse to get high. If a perfect scenario like that wasnt enough to get 60%, how could Florida do it in 2016 if Sheldon Adelson pours millions with ads scaring voters to defeat it again?

The notion of presidential elections giving marijuana a boost over midterms/offyear cause of turnout is bogus. Turnout goes up across the board in presidential elections and down across the board in midterms. Theres no advantage.

  3. Kudos to everyone working on this effort but the 2016 election is still too far away for the more than 750,000 Americans who will die of Cancer between now and then.

  4. Kudos to everyone working on this effort but the 2016 election is still too far away for the more than 750,000 Americans who will die of Cancer between now and then. We need everyone who cares about Medical Marijuana to call the white house comment line, asking that the President get Marijuana removed from Schedule 1, every single day, until the President takes action on this. This year alone, 1.6 MILLION Americans will be diagnosed with Cancer. Every one of them deserves the right to have safe, legal, access to Medical Marijuana. Every. Single. One. The value of Marijuana to Cancer patients for improving their quality of life, easing their pain and suffering, and giving them back their appetite, raising their spirits, and giving them back their will to live is beyond dispute. That’s more than enough reason for anyone to want Cancer patients in all 50 states to have safe, legal, access to Medical Marijuana — and that’s what 85% of Americans, including 82% of American Oncologists want. But now things are even more urgent, because of the results Cancer patients are seeing with High Dose Medical Marijuana Oil Therapy (HDMMOT), even when their Cancer is at Stage 4. We need the President to take action now. Your calls and emails can make all the difference. Don’t wait until you or someone you love gets Cancer to start calling and emailing, by then it will be too late for you. Do it now. Do it every day and enlist the help of everyone you know to do it to. The life you save may be your own, or that of someone you love.
